I would probably panick too, or see if there was any way that we could save ourselves, be it parachutes or whatever, or trying to contact the ones i love to say i loved them. I wouldn't pray. Do you really think prayer helps at all? if this was the case, i'm sure we would live in a world where there would be no suffering, no one would die, there would be no hunger, no wars, nothing bad...because of course all you believers pray for good things, and everywhere you turn you can see your god doesn't respond. So really, i think it's better to actually do something about things, not just say the words to the air.

As far as I'm concerned praying is just like letting it happen. For you, it might make you feel better, because you believe you're communicating with God, maybe throwing in a few compliments just to insure your place in heaven... but if I don't believe in God, what difference is it going to make? Absolutely none.
And in response to your added details, religion is largely a comfort for people. You think I wouldn't like to have some reason to believe that there is a God who is going to save my family or my life if I pray hard enough. That there is eternal life after death or that heaven is perfect and just bubbling wonderful? Yeah, sure. I'd also like to believe in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy. Wonderful stories, but they're just not real. Don't talk to me as if you know something I don't, because as far as I'm concerned you just bought into a pretty lie. No, I can't prove God exists, you have to have faith. Yeah, I'll go up to you and tell you that if you jump off a cliff you will float down. Of course you'd ask me to prove it and if I told you to just have faith, you would laugh... and you should, because it's rediculous. People just need to feel like they have at least some control over things and they'll believe almost anything.

Years ago, in the military, I was doing a routine parachute drop, and my parachute didn't open. I managed to get my reserve chute out in time, but I was amazed that I did.
I wholeheartedly had accepted the fact that I was about to die. As I saw the ground rushing towards me, I was not scared, in fact, I was almost chuckling a bit. I thought the situation sort of humorous for some reason. I guess I sort of thought... "Boy, isn't this just my luck...?"
But before I managed to get my reserve out, I do remember the final thought I had. I knew that if my reserve didn't open, I had about 3 seconds to live. And as the ground was rushing at me, I simply thought..."****, this is gonna hurt..."
God never entered the equation...
Edit - in response to your edit. No, we don't sit and let things happen. We work to fix the situation. I know you can't understand this, because your head is warped by your religion, but consider the possibility that your prayers are worthless (I can prove they are) Who is the one "doing nothing"? That would be you, darling...

I would do anything I could to solve the problem, but not praying. It's like one of my pops' favorite sayings: Why would you bring a knife to a gun fight.
How the hell would praying to some imaginary friend help you in that circumstance?
You additional details are just as ridiculous.
Whenever I see God actually do something I will believe. Until then I will take responsibility for my life, and actions.

First of all, you praying wont make the plane magically start flying again, so you are also "just letting it happen" also.
But what would I be doing... probably try contacting the ones I love before the plane hits the ground.

Sorry to disappoint you, but no, I would NOT cave at the last minute and start praying.
That's for frightened little people like you, who need to believe in
Santa Claus for adults. Believe that crap, if it makes you feel all snug and secure. I know better.
'His eye is on the sparrow' ? Yeah, so why does he sit and watch as the hawk turns it into an explosion of blood and feathers.

I would be looking for a way to save myself, short of that I would be helping those around me, unlike you who would be selfishly praying. It amuses me to think that you assume we all would suddenly want to adopt religion and god just because we are about to die! Sorry to disappoint you too! I guess I should assume that god felt that all the people who have died in horrible disasters deserved to die since he did not save them. I am sure there were some that were praying. What a silly question!

And would you praying stop it from hitting the ground?
If so I would be letting you pray, while I searched for a way to stop the plane from crashing.

I would try to accept the fact that this is life and this is how it works. Or taking my chances with the steering stick thingy.
I'm not really and atheist, I just don't believe there is an afterlife. I wouldn't want to be for eternity.
Everything that has a beginning has an end.
Some ends come quickly.
