The stator aka pick-up in the distributor is bad, also replace the module on the side. You will have to remove the distributor to do this. Reset timing to 10 deg before TDC, be sure to pull the spout connector near the dist. to set timing. If you know its the fuel psi then replace both the PCM and Fuel pump relays.

Remember in 88 there are fuel pumps in the tanks, and one on the frame. If the low pressure pump in the tank doesn't sent the fuel to the high pressure pump, you will have trouble. Some of these trucks have 2 fuel filters.

Hmm sounds kinda dumb?
you mean if you drive slower?
OK lets pretend that that's what you mean .OK my experience with engines is average but i did stay at a holiday inn and i switched to Geico,OK lets move on i had an 81 ford and it was the points you may have to set the points or the shaft may be loose
ford decided to use a synthetic pin in the points shaft and it was a bad idea cause they would shear at high rates of speed (such as when you get stuck in the mud) any way i think that may be your problem I'm not sure tho but check it out,it also could be you have water in the tank use a gas booster that takes the water out, some trucks will not run on low grade fuels, try changing to a higher grade most fuels today have additives in them and they cause bad performance my source is my neighbor hes a chemist for Phillips conoco, last trade the truck in and get one that drives on the highway your truck may be scared
of the new Dodges

Might need to replace any o2 sensors. the highway could be increasing the temperature of the o2 sensors causing them to trip off the computer.
Not sure if your 88 has a TPS. (Throttle Position Sensor). Check that as well.
INspect your distributor cap and rotor for any wear. Certain RPMS could be affecting the spark if they are worn.
