I know many Christian parents who do. I heard it more than once from different people when I was a kid. It's emotional terrorism, but there you have it.

First, when a child is young and I honestly do not know what age this is up to, but there is an age of accountablity in the bible.
That age is when the child is not held accountable for his or her sins, and if death occurs, will not go to Hell, for not having accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
This age is probably a maturity age, rather than a physical one, considering that mentally handicapped children and adults with no way of understanding their surroundings certainly would never reach any age of accountability.
Honestly, I have raised my children in a biblically doctrinal Christian Church and have never used the words to them, that they were going to burn in Hell, I do however and have used the words, "would Jesus like what you are doing right now?"
Although, burn in hell is biblically correct as far as not accepting the free gift, there are nicer ways to put it, but then again, some people do need to hear it that way.
Explaining what Hell is to a five year old, is much like explaining that they would never get to see someone they love deeply again.
Telling them that they would never see grandma again if she were in heaven and they were in hell, helps them understand that they would be separated from Love.

Teaching a child about God and Jesus is really not that difficult.
It's done by the example of your own life and in how you deal with the child.
One of the things that I have instilled in my grand children is that I don't reward bad behavior.
A cell phone is a privilege not a right.
A computer is a privilege not a right.
Going to Sea World or Cedar point is a privilege not a right.
I'm sure you get the point.
The other thing that is important is that children are taught that actions have consequences.

Ask yourself what you've done with your free will: Have you ever lied, stolen anything or used God's name in vain (blasphemy)? Ever dishonored your parents?
If you've answered "yes" to these questions, then by your own admission, you're a lying, thieving, blaspehemous person who has not honored the parents God has given you. That was just 4 of the10 Commandments, and there are 6 we haven't even gone through yet. Will you be innocent or guilty on the Day of Judgment, when you're judged by a perfect God? Listen to your conscience. You know that you will be guilty and the consequence is Hell. That's not God's will.
He provided a way for you to be forgiven. He sent His Son to take your punishment by dying on the cross. We broke the Law, but Jesus paid our fine. If you turn from your sins and trust in Him, He will grant you everlasting life.
God's sorrow will be because we have free will and consciences, and yet we knowingly sin against Him. He provided a way for us to escape Judgment through His Son, yet many of us choose not to be forgiven because we love our sin too much.

You don't burn in hell for doing wrong things, you burn in hell for not having salvation through Jesus Christ. Kids don't need to know what hell is because God does not hold them accountable for their sins until they are a little older and able to understand heaven and hell and how you get there. As for punishment, God's word says to spank.

Close to the same way a regular parent would, little childern most of the time cannot grasp the concepts of hell therefore why would you threaten anyone with that anyway...
Punishment would be close to the same as a normal atheist person, a probable time out.

Read the Bible to them and explain what things mean. The Bible says to train up a child in the way they should go.

I would never tell one of my children that. Sometimes I may spank, put them in time out, or not let them do something (but always make sure they know why they are being punished)
You can purchase a children's bible for your child that would be easier to understand.

How would you discipline your kid. Telling them that they would burn in hell is not an option.
And as for the other question, it would depend on the age and if they are mature enough to understand it. Otherwise that explanation can come later.

You don't know how to teach a child? It's just like teaching them the abc's or how to spell their name. Read the Bible and teach them so that they will understand. Some of you don't think! And yes, you can be taught that as I was when I was actually 6, and I am teaching my child the same thing and he understands just fine by my explanations.
