What does the Church need to do to become relevant again in society?

If you mean "the Roman Catholic church," instead of the general concept of "the church" that supposedly includes all Christians, it's not likely to happen under Benedict XVI. His dogmatic approach to public relations will drive people away from the church.

Attendence has been dropping since the pedophile scandals, and many people don't agree with the church's anti-gay and anti-birthcontrol policies--enough so that they've stopped attending.

And the church is having trouble attracting new priests. There are some movements to remove the celibacy requirement (which didn't always exist), but it certainly won't happen under Ben XVI.

Going back to the basics. Things that Jesus Taught when he walked on this earth on human flesh. And when the apostles were alive - to see how church was run then and practicing that would make the church relevant again in our society

If by "Church" you mean Organized Religion --as in, primarily the RC Church-- I imagine SHE would need to 'fess up, let her hair down and do away with all the contrived make-up she's had on for ages...

That would mean removing all the accoutrements from top to bottom, including the blonde wig, false eyelashes, false teeth, false boobs, Wonder bra, heavy-duty corset, fake nails, and prosthetic limbs for starters...

I'm talking about a major overhaul here. It's time for a real EXTREME MAKEOVER, folks.

I'd suggest accepting that Jesus is not the only way to live a good life, accepting that gays are human beings too and their lifestyle is as legitimate as anyone else's, stop the hellfire and the condemnation and try to be a non-judgemental force of good in the world.
