I believe poverty is a political question. Bono's work to cancel debt or provide "debt relief" is a great step towards making the work a more just and equitable place. Other ideas... Promote FAIR TRADE rather than free trade. Free trade is another way of institutionalizing the inequity that exists today. The IMF and the world bank, the main international organizations that dictate trade policy are bureaucracies run by the wealthiest nations and end up promoting the interests of wealth at the expense of the world's poor. That's on the international scale...
Nationally we need to raise the minimum wage, reverse the president's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, and address root causes of poverty: racism, a failing education and health care system, and massive corporate corruption.
At the very local level, volunteer at schools and community centers. Shop at local mom and pop stores rather than big-box chains. Donate clothes and food to the needy.
I know most of this is common sense... but if more people acted on these principles, we could reduce poverty in the U.S. Oh and as the largest consuming nation on the planet... Choose to live a simpler life. Choose modesty so that others may have choices.

Why go to Bono - go directly to your local Salvation Army, homeless shelter or whatever charity is in your locality and help out there.
It's great that all these people want to help Africa and the 3rd world coutries but I think we forget that we have our own poverty ridden people right in our backyards, so to speak, and should be helping them too.

you do no longer might desire to clone the likes of Bono or Bob Geldof. All you want is to renounce the debt. Britain might purely use the money for conflict. So i say why do no longer we purely permit Africa keep the money. even with each thing they may be all their lives working to pay it off and with a bit of luck they are able to start to stay life to the excellent and attempt and get on with their life.

I'm to realize that the way to Heaven now is by me stop being in charge of my temporary life to allow the beautiful Creator God of the everlasting implement his perfect design unconditionally. This is the Way of Jesus (Yeshua).
When Nature's Almighty (not religion) truly changes my life, I automatically become an agent of goodwill to the core. Others will follow when they see how well Jesus' Way works and will start benefiting the poor as God enables them. It will be a more permanent effect than throwing grains at them without showing them how to figure out their next day.
Challenge churches that if they truly share God's heart, to then stop going silent on men's violence against women in Africa and everywhere. Challenge churches that if they understand love, to teach men how to behave with the love from their Creator. Challenge churches that if they understand Jesus' Way, to stop being afraid of the concequences of being more influential.
Stop depending on human invented churches. Only one Master will prevail. Jesus (Yeshua) is the love expressed for all by the Creator of all. Study the Gospels of Mark, John or others in the Bible. God's eager to reveal Himself to you directly.
May His love shows.

If you are truly serious, then you need to volunteer your time and/or money to charities that help people help themselves.
A straight hand-out is ok for a short-term problem, but in order to fix someone's life, they need to take charge themselves.
The saying is true: Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
