It's weird having a conversation with someone when they start talking about Christian things. One example would be, "Don't worry, when the Lord comes back everything will be right." Another example, "Don't worry, son, it was God's will that he/she died."

I do sometimes. But then I realize that they just don't know any better.

I saw a news story the other day, a car crashed into a building and 5 of the 6 occupants of the vehicle were killed int he accident. The relatives of the dead, those poor deluded fools, explained to the reporter that it was god's blessing that the 6th person survived.

Me, I'd be looking to lynch the sumbitch god for murdering the other 5, but no, these people believe his sparing the 6th person was a blessing.

If that's not just plain wierd, I don't know what is.

I'm a Christian, and I get weirded out by statements like those. For example, does God know the future? If she does, then how are we free? Human freedom and divine foreknowledge are incompatible. Is God able to make anything happen that she wants to? Then there's no way she's not to blame for a whole lot of evil in the world -- not human evil, but natural evils like earthquakes and polio. So right off the bat, two main aspects of "traditional" theology -- omniscience and omnipotence -- fly completely in the face of our actual experience. It was God's will that this child died of leukemia? Or ran in front of a truck? What kind of f-ed up being would God be? If a person acted like that -- able to prevent random, horrible accidents, and didn't -- we'd lock them up.

The key is that these are all just *human ideas* about God. I think some of our ideas are correct, and some are incorrect. But *only you* can make up your mind about which is which, and who you think God really is. The basis has to be your own spiritual experience, carefully reflected on, and not the blind acceptance of what "Christian" authorities tell you, whether the Pope or the Bible. Did it weird you out when I called God "she"? Why would it? God is no more "he" than "she." It's all just the ideas we've been taught. But we have to think for ourselves!

The mistake is treating (fundie type) christians as if they are behaving rationally. Once you realise that they are living in a fantasy world created by their delusions about christianity and hence are not capable of rational discussion, there is no reason to get weirded out by their statements. They are just objects of pity, or if you're a bit short on charity, ridicule.

Its only weird when sane people simply stand by and let those blanket statements go without a word of correction.

Imagine someone stating out loud that the world was created by a giant squirrel. And no saying anything.

I know exactly what you mean. It's gotten so bad that at the first sign of such talk, I end the conversation, walk away and make sure I never speak to this person ever again.
Because life is too short to waste on these idiots.

I guess people that don't believe in God get weirded out by it. People who live in lives of sin usually run from anything that has to do with religion because it would mean cleaning up their act and changing. most people don't actively seek ot change unless there is something wrong in their lives.

I love the answers to this question, they show how impossible it is to continue following the anti-christ and gain converts. Nobody is buying the obvious malarky.

If God wills it my earthly brother then I don't think it's weird at all. Bless you for asking such an insightful question.
