We want to drive up next weekend and stay in Windsor for a night with our friend from Switzerland. We all have our passports just worried if it will look odd that 2 Americans and a Swiss when coming back to the U.S.? We'd hate to get there and her not be able to get back.

Have no fears. They can look at your friend's passport and see that he/she is good to go. However, if they came over on the visa waiver program, there may be problems getting them back into the country. Let me go take a look. Be right back.

OK, no problem:

Can I Enter at a Land Border from Canada or Mexico on the VWP?
Yes. If you are a citizen from a Visa Waiver country, you can enter the United States on the Visa Waiver program from Canada and Mexico. You do not have to show round-trip tickets. You do not have to arrive at the land border on a carrier (form of transportation) which has an agreement with the U. S. Government.

won't be a problem providing your Swiss friend has appropriate passport and visas (to re-enter the States). Should probably have proof of a return airfare to Switzerland.

Swiss citizens do NOT require a visa to visit Canada.
US citizens do NOT need a passport to visit Canada

I travelled from Switzerland to Canada through the US with my two Swiss children and even that went over fine. (I'm Canadian--so are they but their passports had expired.)

As long as everyone has passports (also bring birth certificates if you can) they technically cant do anything to prevent you from entering the country.

If you are that worried call the international border where you will be crossing and ask what additional requirements may be needed

No problem. If you friend has already entered the U.S. you know that all of the paperwork is ok.

They won't think anything of a couple of Americans and a Swiss.

Now go, and have fun.

If you have all the proper identification, they aren't going to bother you.
