I second Julie's answer. She isn't eating her own food, because she's getting the people food from your mom. You need to STOP letting anyone give her people food, otherwise she will become accustomed to getting food from the table. Follow Julie's advice and leave the dog food out twice a day for a limited amount of time. When she figures out that this is the only opportunity and only food she'll get, she'll eat it. If she doesn't eat for a day or two, don't freak out. Dogs in the wild can go a long time without eating between kills. Whatever you do, don't give in and give her human food or treats out of fear that she's starving, because it'll just be a continuation of the cycle.

I wouldn't recommend putting canned food in the dry food, because again, she'll get accustomed to it and won't eat her food without the canned food, and dry food by itself is best for her teeth. You could, however, try changing her dog food if she really hates eating it. I did that until I found a food that my dog loves.

Lastly, walk her regularly (2 walks a day for 30 min. each is ideal), because it'll build up her hunger and she'll eat whatever is presented to her.

Well it sounds like your dog has you, and your family, very well trained. People food is better tasting than her food therefore she goes for the best that is provided. Anyone would. The answer is simple. STOP FEEDING HER PEOPLE FOOD! If she won't eat her dog food she will get hungry enough to start. Put the food down for her (read the lable on the bag for feeding suggestions and cut that in half to feed twice a day or only feed once a day if you prefer) for 15-30 min in the morning and if she doesn't eat it that is her loss. Do not give people food during the day because you feel sorry for her. SHE made the decision to wait until the evening to eat, not YOU. Then that evening put the food down again. If she doesn't eat again that is her decision. I would bet an awful lot that by the next moringing she will be more than happy to eat her food. Make sure you do not withold water. That is very important, you do not want to be cruel, you just want to get the point across that people food is for people and dog food is for dogs. If you and your family can't resist feeding her a "treat" off your plates at mealtime, keep her in a seperate room while you eat. She will figure out what is happening, that she needs to eat her food when it is provided, and will be healthier because of it.

There is a lot of people food that is harmful to dogs. Get her a premium quality dog food. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are some of the best ones. Get her on a 3 time a day feeding schedule. put her food down for 20 minutes, then remove it if she hasn't eaten. offer it again at the next feeding time. NO people food, NO treats. When she gets hungry enough she will eat! She has your family trained to give her what she wants so it may take a couple of days but hang tough, don't give in. It is for her own good.

It is not good for a dog to eat people food. Believe it or not, dog food has been formulated with thier needs in mind. What we eat does not meet their nutritional requirements. That being said - STOP feeding her what she wants, when she wants it. You have allowed the dog to call the shots here - she has YOU trained, and it should be the other way around. It's simple, place her food out for her, leave it there for 30 minutes and then pick it up and take it away. Do this once in the morning, and once at night. And don't feed her anything else. It may take a day or two, but she will quickly figure out that her food - first, isn't just going to be available to her all day, should she have to eat it, and second, that she isn't getting anything else. She will eat when she gets hungry enough

Sounds like she has your mom trained pretty well. ;)

You're going to have to break her of the habit for her own safety and health. There are some people foods that will land your dog very quickly in the emergancy room, or worse. Some are harmless, but it's just better to avoid the risks. People food will also make her gain weight, and it's harder on a dog's body to be overweight than it is on ours.

Have your mom keep a bowl of dog food by her plate when she eats. When your dog begs, have her feed the dog food if she must. Or even bits of raw carrot. Dogs can have carrots, and they're good for their teeth.

In the meantime, you need to set up a plan for stopping it. Believe it or not, dogs will eat if they get hungry enough. They might pout a lot and lose a pound or so, but they will eat. (Only ever seen one exception to this rule, and that dog was the most stubborn little dog I've ever met... *heh*)

Set a date, and on that date, stop feeding her *anything* from the table, *ever*. Set up specific feeding times for your dog, and stick to them. Leave the dish of food down for a half-an-hour. Then, pick it up and *do not* put it back down until next time. Like I said, she'll make you nervous, but eventually, she'll learn to eat what she has, when she has it. Don't give in, and she will learn.

Best of luck to you!

When you start feeding a dog people food, they won't touch dog food anymore. Its like when you eat a cheeseburger for the first time from mc'Donald's and then you try a hardee's burger... It's not the same. It happened with my dog

The solution we had was to not give her anything because eventually she will have to eat. And whats gonna be there... dog food, she'll have no choice. Also don't try to give her a whole bowl of food, our dog just turned it overafter she nibbled on it.

Give her people food for all her meals one day. The next day give her 3/4 people food & 1/4 dog food. Then do 1/2 & 1/2. Then 1/4 pf & 3/4 df. Then all dog food.

"People food" should be healthy, for the most part, for dogs. They can and should eat chicken, meat, fish, veggies and fruits, rice and pasta. For dog food give her very healthy food, not found in supermarkets or big pet stores but found in smaller, upscale pet storesl. Some good foods are Spots Stew, Chicken Soup for the dogs soul, Merrick, Wellness, Solid Gold. You can mix in some canned chicken or turkey into it to make it more appealing to her. She should not have onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, raisins, grapes. She can and should have a balanced diet - a meal of perhaps chicken, rice and veggies such as peas, carrots, tomatoes would be perfect. Don't continue to feed her from the table though or she will continue to beg. Give her the healthy and tasty food in her own bowl.

You have answered your own question.
As long as the dog is getting people food...why eat dog food?

Put the dog outside or in another room during dinner times.

Yes, sometimes pf will cause health problems for animals.

She may not eat the first few times you put food out for her, but she will come around. Keep plenty of water out for her.
