I am not Catholic BUT I have a lot of friends that are. I think what you are/have seen is intelligent people doubting what has been pounded into their heads, from a very young age, and they are beginning to question much of what they have been told. Many of my friends are still, or went through a phase, where they considered themselves "lapsed Catholic's". I do have to add that as some of my friends have gotten older and experienced a loss of a family member or some other traumatic experience it made them turn back to their church. So much of what is "preached" in most religions is so hated-based (passing judgement on others for their belief's, lifestyle, etc.) that it can make a person want to turn their back on the religion they were brought up with.

Unfortunately people have bad experiences every where including Church! In my opinion the Catholic Church has turned in to a business/cover up. It seems that some of the in house catholics have turned money hungry and (as we all know) some have covered up sexual abuse.
When someone has that bad of an experience regarding scams or molestation it is awfully hard to see God through those times, especially when it comes from people who are supposed to be people of God!
That is there personal struggle that needs to be answered. Why it happens, I don't know and I am not suppose to understand it!
I don't have much faith in the Religion aspect of this earth however I have all my Faith in God directly!
That is easy for me to say since I have not dealt with the humiliation or anger from anything similar to my previous comments.
If you search for the truth and get answers through your own search you will see (with out question) that God is there for you and you can bypass that middle man that sometimes seems like a used car salesman!

I don't know about your experience, but it seems to me that a lot of Catholics have grown up being "indoctrinated" as children. They reach a point where they react to this. However, it seems like that can go in a lot of different directions. Some of my friends and family have turned to a protestant form of Christianity. A lot have just stayed as nominal Catholics. You could probably answer better why some react as atheists. Those I have known have usually been reacting to some people or experiences that really turned them off to church and God

Maybe my experience is broader than yours. Among my acquaintances:
A Pentecostal who became Catholic.
A Catholic who became non-denominational.
A Catholic who became Presbyterian.
A Catholic who became agnostic.
A Catholic who became born again, then Muslim.
A Catholic who became wiccan, then atheist, then returned to be Catholic.
A Pentecostal who became wiccan, then Episcopalian.
A Presbyterian who became Catholic, then non-denominational, then Methodist, now Episcopalian.
I think the Anna Karenina principle applies. In every imperfect relationship with the Church (since perfect relationships don't break), there is a different story.

My parents were Catholic, but rather than becoming atheists, became born again Christians after reading the Bible. They now go to a church that follows biblical teachings exclusively.

Based on how much $ and land the Catholic Church has, I don't think they're losing followers at that great a rate. I think it's just rebelling against beliefs we were forced into at a young age, now that we have more freedom to make up our own minds.

My younger brother. He was mad at God for a few years. He really only told me and my mom he was an atheist and never really invested in it. After he got over the anger of his friend dying, he went right back to the Church.

I know lots of Catholic people who go to church, pray, go to confession, have their kids baptized, and all the rest. A lot of people are not real religious (in any religion) any more because they just don't have time with working every day of the week.

You're hanging out with the wrong crowd. I was an Atheist in Junior High and early High School and went back to the church.

The Catholic church keeps the esoteric meaning of salvation and the soul hidden away behind symbology, like the Trinity and the resurrection of Jesus for instance.
Someone that is looking for answers inside themselves, they see these symbols, but they don't know the meaning behind them. Jesus becomes no better than Santa Claus, and when you become an adult you put away childish things.
