Friendship Bread

Starter: 1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 cup milk

Mix these ingredients together. Cover with a towel or put in a ziplock bag. Do not use a metal spoon and do not refrigerate.

Day 1: The day you receive (or make) your starter do nothing. If you make the starter, mix it, cover and do nothing more.

Day 2, 3, & 4: Stir thoroughly with a wooden spoon and cover again.

Day 5: Add another 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, and 1 cup milk and stir. Cover again with a towel.

Day 6, 7, 8, & 9: Stir with a wooden spoon. Cover again.

Day 10: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Stir and pour off three 1 cup starters to give to friends, saving one for yourself. The cup for yourself is the starter for another batch so save it to beginning again. Give the other two away to friends with this recipe.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, add the remaining batter (about 1 1/3 cup, this does not include the cup you saved for yourself) to the following:

1 cup oil
2 cups flour
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of milk
1 large box of instant vanilla or butterscotch pudding
1/2 tsp of baking soda
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp of salt
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Mix well and pour this new batter into two well-greased and sugared 8x8 cake pans or loaf pans. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before removing from the pans. The bread freezes well. Enjoy and share the other batter with your friends in a ziploc bag.

AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD: Mix oil, eggs, and vanilla with the starter mix.
In a separate bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, vanilla pudding mix, and nuts.
Add to liquid mixture and stir thoroughly.
Pour into two large well-greased 9x5 inch loaf pans, or one Bundt pan, that have been sprinkled with a mixture of cinnamon, sugar, and flour.
Sprinkle more cinnamon and sugar on the tops of the unbaked loaves (or cake). Bake at 325F for one hour or until done.
