The Dead Sea is great and Israel is very safe.
El Al and Israir both offer flights from the US to Israel. Here are some discount travel sites:

If you're with a group - going through a travel agency would probably be the best option. Our group used Tailor-Made tours and we had a wonderful time. Here's a list of tour companies:

As for hotels, don't forget that kibbutzim are also wonderful places to stay. Please visit these two sites:

While near the Dead Sea, don't miss the Ahava factory for wonderful products made from the sea.
Also, almost every establishment there will take US dollars, but the exchange rate can vary widely. Try to purchase in Shekels (ILS) and remember that you can often negotiate the prices for many items at many places.
Good luck and have a wonderful time!

Yes, it's still safe. The best way is usually to go through a travel agent; because they do large-scale business with airlines, hotels, etc., they can get the best selection and prices. They also know what questions to ask--things you would never think of.
You have to see Ein Gedi (the oasis) and Masada while you are in the area... And just be sure to get the usual tourist photo--of you "swimming" on your back with your hands and feet in the air!!

A lot of what you're inquiring about depends on several things(I am Owner of a Travel Agency, so this is common):
1-When do you want to go specifically?
2-Your Travel Budget?
3-When you say you want to go to the DEAD SEA, is there a certain location?(It borders Israel and Jordan. Safe to go to either side, by the way)
Once you have determined those minor issues, then it makes it much easier to put your trip together. If you could kindly either call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger with your specifics, I can see what is doable in the timeframe and budget you have to work with.

There are two ways to the dead sea, you can go to the Israeli side or the Jordanian side, both are safe.
On the Jordanian side, we have movin pick and Marriott dead sea resort. Both are very nice with excellent Spas.
If you come to Jordan you can see both Petra and Jerash(a roman city) which have no equivalent on Israel side.
Middle eastern food should be better here.
Amman is very nice. And US, UK, and EU people really like it.
Usually many tourists try to visit both Jordan and Israel in the same trip.
As for best air lines to come to Jordan, I would suggest RJ, BA, AF, or LH.
A good hotel in Amman would be Howard Johnson(usually around 65-90usd)
I am not sure about hotels in petra but there are very good ones.

its an amazing place to visit. if i were you, i would experience the jordanian side as well. you could visit petra while you are there, and many other sites in jordan as well. the dead sea is very tranquil. there are some amazing places on the jordanian side, where there are waterfalls, of what they call sweet water, that flows into the dead sea.they are small, but very beautiful. and petra is a must see,its breath taking, and not many words can describe that rose city.
