If plaque from teeth and gums isn't removed by good daily dental care, over time it will harden into a crust called calculus or tartar. Once tartar forms, it starts to destroy gum tissue, causing gums to bleed and pull away from the teeth. This is known as periodontitis (pronounced: per-ee-oh-don-ty-tus), a more advanced form of gum disease.
With periodontitis, gums become weakened and form pockets around the base of teeth. Bacteria pool in these pockets, causing further destruction of the gums. As periodontitis spreads, it damages deeper gum tissue and can eventually spread to areas of the jawbone that support the teeth. This can cause teeth to become loose and fall out. Though periodontitis is rare in teens, it can happen. If it's not treated, it can cause real trouble for your teeth.
Basically tartar causes you to have bad breath, can cause gum disease, rot your teeth, etc. etc... and who wants yellow teeth?
Just brush them twice a day and you're good to go! =)

Bad breath can be caused by such things as certain foods, poor oral hygiene, gum disease, a dry mouth (xerostomia), tobacco products or a medical disorder. When bacteria accumulate because of poor oral hygiene or gum disease, or when saliva is lacking, bad breath can result. Saliva is necessary to wash away food particles and bacteria. Certain medications and disorders can lead to a dry mouth. The tongue has small ridges and grooves on the surface which can trap food, plaque and bacteria. If these grooves are not cleaned regularly with a tongue cleaner or a tooth brush, they can cause a foul odor. The back of the tongue is an especially critical area to keep clean.
Sometimes a sinus infection, postnasal drip or other respiratory tract infection can cause bad breath. If bad breath is persistent, contact your dentist to determine whether the cause is of dental origin.
Gum disease if left untreated can also be a major cause of bad breath. Tarter builds up around the teeth in gum disease and causes a foul odor to be emitted. Teeth that are decayed emit foul odors. The decay process is caused by bacteria eating away the tooth structure. The gases and waste products of the bacteria give off the typical odor of bad breath.

Was at the dentist yesterday,Tarter is a mineral deposit on your teeth. The minerals come from your saliva. Plaque is formed(and occupied by) bacteria. These bacteria can actually be seen under a microscope. They look like swarms of tiny bugs!! :-)=

Tartar or calculus is bad because it basically creates surface area for plaque to form and thus create more calculus. Plaque is responsible for gum disease. Tartar doesn't rot your teeth.

Tartar is holding bacteria. Bacteria eat sugar and sh!t acid. Your teeth get eaten by the acid. You can not brush there.
