There's plenty to learn in a church service. Part of the point is that you are around other Christians getting to know one another. Another part of the point is that you are there to worship God, to express awe, thanksgiving, praise, and respect for the Creator of the universe. A third part of the point is that the sermon is supposed to be applicable to your life. If it's not, the pastor or priest isn't doing his job. During the sermon, listen for something in it that you can apply to your life suring the upcoming week. I can assure you that you won't be the only one.

I pay attention to the message because I need direction and inspiration to guide me through the week. After church I make quick good-byes and leave. So, Yes I pay attention. No, I am not there to show off and gossip. Peace to you always,

If you don't pay attention to what is being taught, then there is no reason to be there. We are creatures possessed of a dual nature, body and spirit. Just as the body has need of constant nourishment, so does the spirit. Going to church and participating in the lessons and talks, along with reading our scriptures and praying and meditating on all of it, is how we get our spiritual nourishment. Without it, we become spiritually starved until we become spiritually dead. When that happens, then we are no better than all the other animals on earth. We are supposed to be stewards over the animals, not just another one of the same class of beings. Thus, the need for spirituality.

I pay attention but then in Mass one is always quiet and reverent. Showing off and gossiping are bad habits and if one really must do them do them outside of church.

Yes I listen. Sometimes my mind wanders a little, but that happens to me all the time. We go to the early service which has casual dress. I've gone just out of bed with my T-shirt and sweatpants on. Not much to show off wearing that. As far as gossip, I'm sure it goes on, but I try not to talk about people.

Church attendance for me is a time to truly worship God in song and giving and I listen to the sermon and I pray. I don't have anything to show off, so that's out, and we don't stay long afterwards or unless it's to inquire about someone who's been ill so I can send them a note of encouragement. You might be saying "yeah, right" - but it's really trule. Our church is very small, and I don't feel well, so standing around afterwards just doesn't do anything for me at all. We don't spend money on Sundays so that eliminates 90% of the conversations I hear about where people are wanting to go and eat and with whom. I hear a lot of gossping and I find it sad that they have just sat through a beautiful message of the Lord and then so instantly return their thoughts to the world. We usually go home, enjoy our over baked meal, and then listen to worship music or Pastor Lutzer from Chicago Moody Bible Church. By then we usually nap or discuss the messages or visit with our neighbors - about their morning worship service, they attend a different fellowship of believers than we do. For the past several months, as I've been very ill, we usually stay in and my husband and son read scriptures to me and we listen to Dr. Lutzer and then I sleep. We get Radio Bible Classes Discovery Videos and will watch them in the afternoons. We usually update our prayer lists from the past week and I try to write or have my husband write notes or cards to those we earnestly pray for and those who God lays on our hearts to keep encouraged. Then I have two ladies who both call on Sunday afternoon that are homebound and I share what God has done and the messages I"ve listened to this week and pray with them. My husbands folks call him each Sunday evening. We believe it to be a day to worship God, be about the things that honor and glorify his name, and to rest. So that is what we do. Our pastor brings us the Sunday School lesson on Sat. evening so we usually cover it on Sunday as a family since we've not been able to physically leave the house. But illness is no excuse to turn it into just another day of the week.

My wife actually does, I struggle. A lot of Christian gossip too much, or go to church to look good. Going to church is not a requirement in the Bible.

why would i want to show off. I go to church to get a life lesson out of it. I don't like gossip because what is happening in one's life is there own business. I go there to learn more about God and learn to make mysef a better person.

Obviously there are some people who do it for the wrong reasons, but as for myself, I pay attention. I love being there, worshiping God and hearing messages from God that apply to my life. I feel so much better afterwards, and my whole week feels wrong without it.

i went to a roman catholic mass back in october for a wedding, as soon as the mass ended, everyone bolted to the party for drinks, not one mention of God at the party
different from the roman catholic wedding i went to 5 years ago, where i was best man, and going through my religious phase, and i quoted scripture in the toast, much to the peoples delight,
i think theres some good and some bad, but obviously, it depends on the group
