I love this verse. It is one of the verses I desire to live my life by "he that seeks to keep his life shall lose it...but he that loses his life for my sake, shall find it."
The more I give up of myself and the more I ask the Lord to guide me in my choices, use me for His purposes, the more truly "myself" I feel. Interesting, since you would think pursuing your own agenda in life would contribute to a surer sense of "self". But no...I feel like I'm truly being the person I was "meant" to be when I give up my selfish desires and ask Jesus to control my thoughts, deeds, words, thinking, my very life.

To me, this passage is saying that those who watch out for only themselves in this world ("save his life") have not really done anything worthwhile for others. Those who devote their life to Him and His work instead of strengthening their own situation will find a new kind of life in the happiness that comes from helping others. Thus, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" means that if a wo/man works so hard to build her/his own worldly goods, s/he looses that eternal happiness that is brought from within.

Jesus was sent to the lost sheep of Israel. He knew time was short. Evangelizing the Jews was going to be hard at best. One would have to give up everything to do what Jesus was doing-even give his life.
Once Jesus was gone and Israel remained unrepentant, then the invitation was given to the gentiles. Some take some scoff at it.

Basically this means that no matter what happens in life, we should always follow The Lord's will for our lives, and no matter what happens as a result, we will be profitable and happy. The only way to truly be happy is to live our life for Christ.

It means a person should dedicate his entire life to Jesus. In other words, he will not have any higher priority than following Jesus' teachings and example.

To deny the inner lusts and wants of man and follow Jesus Christ.
Once again no deep inner message here.
