Honestly? They're for warehousing people FOUND guilty of crimes...not neccessarily the people that actually commited them.
That said..it's a warehousing system for criminals and a college of further advancement in the fine art of criminality for same and a school of education for those not yet schooled in the art.
As for reforming, re-education..gimme a break.
Prison systems from state to state, count to county are radically different. We certainly have some prisons that do some good. That's usually do to a super intelligent warden with some unique and radical ideas and certainly not standard prison rules and regs.
Inshort..they temporarily, in some cases permanently, take a person convicted of crimes off the street. No more..no less.

Criminals are sent to Prison as a form of punishment. There are various Levels of rehabilitation and education offered depending on the State and Custody level the Criminal is sent to. Criminal's are sent to prison to protect society, and rightly so. Most felons are eventually released back into society. it is the Prisons role to offer programs and education to change the unlawful and negative behavior of those sentenced. For example a criminal committed to prison for simple assault or domestic violence will most likely be mandated to take anger management classes while incarcerated. By logging onto any State Department of Corrections web site you can see their mission statement and their first goal is to protect the public.

What is done cannot be undone. If they can turn over a new leaf and never do any crime again, they should have the right to be treated as normal society members.Afterall, there are no role they can play in society. If you say they have role,do you mean killing is what we should follow?Destroying public amenities is what we should follow?or drug taking, stealing, corruption, and other negative deeds are what we should follow? But we cannot avoid everyone on Earth to be free of wrong doing. That's why we need police and military to keep the world in order. But we do hope everyone on Earth can understand the standards and laws of the world clearly so that the police and military are only a representation of discipline and not to catch and punish everyone in actual life.

It should be a deterrent to crime and a punishment to those that commit crimes. However, thanks to the liberals, prison is now seen as not such a bad place to be, since the prisoners get free meals, free food, are not forced to work if they do not want to, they get free cable, free Internet, free gyms, free health and dental care, and other things that even some hard working law-abiding citizens do not get if they cannot afford them.

They also pretty much run the prisons, since the guards are not allowed to do anything that can harm a prisoner, even if one of them or a group of them are attacking the guards or some other prison employee.

The obvious... for punishment. But is it really a punishment when there are people who starve everyday, who can't sleep in a safe environment and have no system to better their lives? I'm all for the non- air conditioned, sweat on the chain gang, bread a water to eat types of prisons. It should be punishment, not a vacation in the rolling hills of a country side.

The role of prison in this society is to punish the lower class, and generate revenue for the upper class under the guise of protecting people. The system creates problems then punishes people for trying to solve them with the tools that are given to them. The system also allows the goverment to lock people away who have dissenting views with ease and protect corprate intrests.
A perfect example of this is the drug war.
The true role a prison should serve in society is a place to hold people who are convicted of a crime to rehabilitate them. the way to solve crime is to take away the causes of the crime not to unjustly punish people and teach them to be better criminals.

I feel that prison should be a place no one would enjoy being in. I don't believe in inhumane treatment but, I don't beleve they are intilled to all the rights they get. Work should not be an opion and all the law suits they file that cost the tax payers.

to punish. To people who think prison is a fun place...NOT its dirty and insane. People are shot with rubber bullets. rock salt, told when to eat, sleep, and use the bathroom. Its not a comfortable place to be. While on the other hand prison is becoming one of the biggest retail industries around. I mean bob barker is investing in them for christ sake. They make everthing target stores sell. Its cheap labor 1.10 and hr is real cheap labor think about it. thats why the prisons are so full. Its slavery thats justified.
