Nonsense. Not only was I one, I knew 3 others just in my company of 200-odd guys. My brother, a Marine, was also one. (I would've joined the Marines but they found out I could write.)

And don't kid yourselves, most last words are NOT "Oh God!" They are usually "Oh Sh*t!"

LIFE is a foxhole. Nobody gets out alive. And I'm an atheist. Only the hypocrites find religion when they think they're near death. In the end, we're ALL near death--some are just a bit closer than others.
As for the plane crash analogy: If the believers really, truly, believed, they should all be happy the plane is going down. After all, now they get to the good stuff, right? But you can bet they're wetting their pants in fear--so how strong is their belief, after all?

What rkrmw said. You and I don't exist. We are just in denial. Also, we are in denail of the existence of foxholes... We are a sad and miserable bunch...

(More importantly, this line of reasoning shows that many Christians are motivated strictly by a sense of comfort. For them (those who say this), religion is complete wish-fulfilment: I don't want everything to end, so I have chosen to believe that I am going somewhere else after this. What a sad belief system.

Of course there are atheists in foxholes, and religious people too. The saying simply means that when you get scared enough, you tend to become more religious.

If you think about it, most religions in the world are based on fear of death and fear of the unknown.

I've never personally been in a foxhole. But my Dad fought in WWII, and he didn't notice any atheists around at all. I guess I'll take his word for it, since my Dad wouldn't lie.

Even an atheist may/might be heard to say OH GOD (if there is one) once in a while...of course it's meant in a most insincere way.

It is rumored that Katharine Hepburn became angry at her housekeeper for praying as she lay dying. What about people who never knew about God/god? Why would they be interested in praying at the end?

There's a military association of atheists and agnostics. I wish I remembered its name and web address.

There are no atheists - period.

There are only people in denial.

Show me a plane about to crash and I'll show you a bunch of converts.
