Actually, according to Catholics, the pope is God!

"Against this background of love towards Holy Church, 'the pillar and bulwark of the truth' (1 Tim 3:15), we readily understand the devotion of Saint Francis of Assisi for 'the Lord Pope', the daughterly outspokenness of Saint Catherine of Siena towards the one whom she called 'sweet Christ on earth'" (Pope John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation VITA CONSECRATA, (On The Consecrated Life And Its Mission In The Church And In The World), March 25, 1996.)

"The Pope is of so great dignity, and so exalted that he is not a mere man, but as it were God. and the vicar of God." (Ferraris Ecclesiastical dictionary)

"All names which in the Scriptures are applied to Christ, by virtue of which it is established that He is over the church, all the same names are applied to the Pope." (On the Authority of the Councils, book 2, chapter 17)

"The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth." (Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Chapter XXVII, p. 218, "Cities Petrus Bertanous")

"The Pope takes the place of Jesus Christ on earth...by divine right the Pope has supreme and full power in faith, in morals over each and every pastor and his flock. He is the true vicar, the head of the entire church, the father and teacher of all Christians. He is the infallible ruler, the founder of dogmas, the author of and the judge of councils; the universal ruler of truth, the arbiter of the world, the supreme judge of heaven and earth, the judge of all, being judged by no one, God himself on earth." (Quoted in the New York Catechism)

""To believe that our Lord God the Pope has not the power to decree as he is decreed, is to be deemed heretical." (the Gloss "Extravagantes" o.f Pope John XXII *** inter, Tit. XIV, Cap. IV. Ad Callem Sexti Decretalium, Paris, 1685)

Scary huh?

Good question!

I think the answer is an emphatic NO. If you look in the New Testament, the Book of Acts, chapter 17, verses 10 through 12, you will find a group of believers called Bereans. They are considered "noble" for examining and validating the teachings of an Apostle who is much higher in authority than a Pope. As Christians we are encouraged to make sure that the teaching we receive today, jives with what Jesus and the Apostles taught and wrote. Look at the strong words found in the New Testament book of Galatians, chapter 1, verses 6 through 9.

The Bible is the final authority on all matters of the Christian faith. Feast on it.

Love, joy and peace to you.

The Pope is the Bishop of Rome. Through the millenia he has created a bigger and bigger place for the Magisterium of the Church. He is the successor of Peter, but that simply makes him more equal amongst equals, not overlord of all Catholicism, keeping in mind Coptics, Orthodox, Antiochian, Anglican, and other "catholic" expressions. Scripture says plainly, Count God true, but every man a liar. In regards to doctrine. St. paul said it plainly when he stated in Galatians 1:6-12
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But though we, or an ANGEL from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is not, as you say, Gods' messenger on earth, but he is the spiritual leader of nearly 2 billion people, who was chosen by the Holy Spirit, elected by the College of Cardinals to guide us through our spiritual journey.

A Catholic does not have to believe anything he says, it isn't a law or anything. He gives the official stance of the Church on many teachings including abortion, contraception, marriage, love, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. He is considered to be infalable when it comes to matters of faith because of his vast knowledge of the faith.

Do not believe something simply because you have heard it. Do not believe anything simply because it has been handed down for many generations. Do not believe anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe anything simply because it is written in Holy Scriptures. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of teachers, elders, or wise men. Believe only after careful observation and analysis, when you find that it agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all. Then accept it, and live up to it.
