Where is a better supply store for chefs, Williams-Sonoma or Crate & Barrel?

Both are pretentious and not all they're cracked up to be. If you want to do well, go to a regular restaurant supply house. The utensils, cutlery, glassware, etc is much more amenable to a real chef...and at much better prices.

Crate and Barrel is a great place if you're decorating, but not for real cooks/chefs. Williams Sonoma just plain costs way more than it should.

Sur La Table is better than both Williams-Sonoma or Crate & Barrel. All three are fine if you are decorating your home, but all three are way too expensive. Most chefs don't shop at any of these stores because of cost. If your trying to impress people with your food go to a restaurant supply store - you will save a lot of money. If you want to impress people with shiny pots and pans then shop at one of the above. That's not to say that shiny pots and pans are not good to cook with, but they are not worth the cost. Eat and be happy.

Both are pretty good--I think Crate and Barrell has more to choose from; Williams and Sonoma is a little more expensive than C&B.

Neither. Your local commercial restaurant supply company may have showroom or cash and carry store available to the public. You'll save a tone of money and have a much more practical selection to choose from.
