You paid your orthodontist for your braces; do you have to pay another one? Are you doomed to wear braces for the rest of your life? Can you take them off with pliers and household supplies yourself and melt the metal to construct expensive jewelry?
(And no, this did not happen to me! My braces were removed long ago!)

Most dental professionals have a working relationship where if one were to go on vacation then the other covers for emergencies. In this case I am sure the office will contact you or you could call them to inquire. Be sure to give them at least a week or two before calling because they too are dealing with the trauma of loosing a friend, co-worker and/or employer and may not have an immediate resolution themselves. It is not about you at this point although we tend to think only of ourselves in these type of situations. Be patient with them, any reputable professional should not leave you feeling neglected.
As far as removing them yourself I would strongly discourage this as you could potentially do more harm than help to yourself. Any general dentist can remove the brackets and bands with the appropriate pliers. Additionally, the dentist will need to perform an enamelplasty (to smooth) the remaining light-cured adhesive (glue) from the surface of the tooth where the bracket was adhered.
Although it feels like you have a "mouth full of metal," if melted you would only have about a quarter size amount of metal alloy material.

You go to another orthodontist.
If you have paid for the full treatment and are not yet finished with the braces, their accounting person will likely credit you for what was not finished. Then you go to another orthodontist and pay them to finish the treatment (or for removing the braces) and retainers.
You should come out about even.

Most doctors and dentists have partnering colleagues who help out in situations like that. I know someone who removed her braces with pliers and a razor blade to get the excess glue. She was sick of wearing them so she did it herself.

well at my orthodontist (back when i hate braces), there was 4 or 5 orthodontists who would work on my teeth. Theres usually not only one!! haha

Hmm. What happens to you if your orthodontist passes away. Did you have something to do with it? That would have a lot to do with what happens after he's gone.

Well, since you pay for the visits to maintain them, I'd assume you'd just get a new one and start paying them to take care of them and take them off. :-)

No, they would send you to another one. no money or nothing because.....well you didn't do n e thing wrong. they would remove them.
