all he does is follow me around and lick me. and whenever i try to play with him he just puts his paw on my hand and either licks my face or my hand until i walk away. i try to reassure him that i am ok, but it seems like he is so scared that i am bleeding to death lol.
also, it's kinda embarrassing, when anyone comes near me, he throws himself onto my lap and starts growling lol. and then my mom's jus like "hm, i see you have your period!" And everyone knows, coz he protects "down there". lol
any suggestions??

I think this is the sweetest thing I have ever read on Yahoo answers. I think its either the dog senses the blood and thinks you're in heat, or he senses your mood and wants to cheer you up. It sounds to me like he is comforting you and protecting you from further misery. Its sweet.

It isn't abnormal for a dog to want to protect their owner from harm, or to know when something is "wrong".

Although there is nothing actually wrong with you, your dog there is something different and wants to make sure you are ok. He will protect you if he feels you are weak due to illness.

Another side could be he feels you are his and will keep anyone else away while you are in "heat".

Anyway, tell your mom to stop saying that in front of people, and be glad you have a dog that really wants to make sure you are ok.

Suggestions? Your body chemistry changes when you have your period. Your dog is probably smelling all that chemistry and reacting the best way he knows how. If he smells blood, he probably thinks you might be hurt and is simply trying to protect you from further harm. Just let it be. It's really not a big deal.

I would try to avoid dogs during the time frame especially when you are with others you don't want to be embarrassed in front of especially boys, young men, and older men.

Try placing the dog in a pen or another room when you are expecting company.

Don't feel alone, it happens to the best of us. Just be glad he only growls!

don't worry. dogs can sense just about everything. that's why he's like that during this 'rough' time. he can just sense the blood. that's why dogs are good at 'search & rescue', that's why they're used in police work, and that's why they're used in the military. it is so hard to keep any secrets from a dog. it seems like they know everything. lol.

so all in all, i think this is pretty normal, and it just means that your dog cares about u and wants to protect you. i hope this helped.

Reassuring him is just reinforcing his behaviour. He is more likely reacting to your personality changes (since you know that something different is happening) than anything else (although there are differing pheromones at different times in the menstruation cycle, besides the added menstrual blood).

I think your dog is naturally protective of you.. plus dogs can sense mood changes so if you feel 'down' or anything in your body language changes he might pick up on that.. not necessarilly the scent..
