I never have to back up God's existence. I have faith. That's the key that "non-believers" seem to always miss.

Truth is this, kiddo:
Many if not most believe in god because they have been programmed to do so since the earliest times of their cognition.....
It's simply the easiest answer to a complex question.
Much, much easier to say 'god did it' than imagine this all as an event of chance... Humans are concieted like that. Each one of us has such a powerful sense of self that we cannot imagine our existence not being part of something important. To many, the idea of living a whole life and enduring countless struggles for no apparent reason is difficult to swallow.
Funny that most adults who have 'found religion' did so in the midst of some perilous BS.... seems it's a question folks don't address until things get rough...
In a way, you almost can't blaim those who want to attribute this existence to some sort of higher something. Seriously, when you take the time to look around, there is a sublime beauty to it all - look at how wonderfully designed the human body is - meat engine.... all pieces working together in an almost engineered manner... A gorgeous harmony exists all around and through us...almost seems like a waste to think that we are not part of a larger machine.
And so you get many people all at once percieving that beauty and mingling that realization with fear, superstition and dogma - the end result being the easiest answer we can brew up - 'god did it'

People believe in god/s because they want a feeling of comfort, to know that in the long run (in an afterlife) they will be taken care of and justice will be done.

There is no evidence whatsoever to support the belief that there is a god of any kind. There is no more reason to believe in the gods of Christianity or Islam than there is to believe in the gods of Olympus or ancient Egypt.

Religion was largely spawned in a time of human history when very little was known about natural phenomena. Most of these issues have been addressed, including the question, "what happens when I die?" The answer: cellular activity ceases and your body begins to decompose. What was once your "consciousness" was only a series of electrical impulses buzzing around a structure known as the brain. When the brain ceases to function, there is no evidence (besides wishful thinking) to support the belief that anything of our conscious activity lives in, be it in the form of a soul or otherwise.

If you are seriously interested in this subject, I suggest giving the authors below a chance before speaking to your local pastor/rabbi/mullah. They'll at least give you the opposing arguments, then you can make your own decision.

I see that you write god with a little "g"! I do the same thing! However in my book "entrevista con un extraterrestre" (till now only exists in spanish!) I write about the personal experience I have with what you can call the source of live. What makes us think and decide. God is a name that has been misused in so many ocasions through history that I have difficulties using the name. Most of the time it is a game played by others to strick people and to be able to manipulate them. They allways use Idols like Jesus, Buddah, Mohammed etc... to put a much higher level than the average person. As I am a marketing professor I can see that the institution of religions and their books are the first marketing ever! And not a bad one in the sence that people are still stricked into the trap that was made many centuries ago.
You don´t like it.. step away from it... and be free! Hear from You! Lou

People believe in lots of things they can't 'back up', but that doesn't mean they aren't real. Do you believe that mother's love thier children? Most people do, some don't, but no one can really prove it. Do your parents love you? Prove it!

On a metaphysical level, it's hard to even prove that YOU exist, let alone a supreme being. Have you seen movies like 'The 13th Floor' or 'The Matrix'? These movies challenge our own perceptions of reality, much like existential writers did in the '20s and '30s.

It all comes down to faith -- if believing in God works for someone, or works for you, then let it go. Almost everyone believes in something that isn't real -- hell, most Republicans believed that WMD's existed in Iraq and most Democrats believe that human nature is basically good. Sort of makes those old 'once upon a time' stories seem honest by comparison, doesn't it?

I can't see love but I still know it's there. Some things you have to believe before you can see. So how do you explain what blew up in the Big Bang? A lot of somethings from nothing? But I can't even prove that you exist. It's a sad existence for those that believe in nothing. Strange how I actually heard an atheist cry out once "oh God, help me!" Search your heart.

It's called Faith. You can't prove God exists by seeing him with your own eyes. Jesus said while he was on earth "Blessed are those who have not seen & yet believed". That's an awsome promise and encouragement! He's talking about us! However, we do have Scripture which is God's word - absolute truth. Everthing in there is my belief system. But, it's takes Faith to believe that's true also. That's why it all come's down to Faith and a personal relationship with the Lord. It's an amazing transformation. It's not always easy and convenient to live for the Lord but it's well worth commiting your life to the one who gave it to you. Any questions, feel free to ask. I would be honored.

why not believe in God,
it's great to believe in someone that will never leave you, love you more than anyone on earth, gives you peace and joy. if God dose not exist than what have i lost? I enjoy life and have a great marriage, i love my family and friends and i go through life in a good and positive mood. One of us right so in the end i served a great God who will be happy with me, if you stand before God and are not ready what will you say? If we just die and that's is all then thing will be OK either way for me, But when you stand before Him well?

You just have to believe. Proof? Sure, the Bible is a complete instruction booklet on life. It teaches about temptation, abundance lifes lessons etc.....If you chose to believe you could possibly live in eternal life in heaven. Life is merely a test. It's practice. Depending on how you live your life on what God created for us. Is what you'll get when you die. The earth is just an environment God has created for us just to live temporary. Everything we have God is just letting us borrow it. You have to understand that the minute your born you are slowly dying, because every second spent, is a second towards your death. That's why everyday should be treated like your last, because you don't know when your gonna die. That's a lesson right there.

Hooo boy. I can't really answer this question directly, being an atheist myself. As to why people believe in God, I can probably tackle that one. Most people I know who believe in God believe for one of two reasons: 1) they can't handle life on their own and need to shift responsibility to a force outside themselves; 2) it's convenient. How many people do you know who go to church for the social atmosphere? I know a LOT. I also know a lot of folks who just can't be bothered to think about it. They were raised in thus and such a religion, and it's never occurred to them that there are other options, or it's just not that important. Witness the huge number of folks who profess to believe in God but never go to church. I find that among born-agains, reason #1 is predominant. These are usually people who have f*cked up their lives somehow and need permission to forgive themselves for it. What I don't understand about that is why people can't just acknowledge their mistakes and change their behavior without supernatural intervention. I guess I will never understand it.

Can you deny it? Look around you! The Scripture teaches that "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things NOT SEEN." Every breath we breathe is something we cannot control. Same with heartbeat and many other bodily functions. Who's controlling it? The beauty that surrounds us, did man create the grass of the field, the birds of the air? Who did? These and many fine points of faith are among the reasons I can say God exists, because there's nothing in the mind or power of man that can maturate such things.
