Thinking of recreating old Bristol and am wondering how easy it might be. What software would be available. Obviously I would need to be able to reconstruct the facade of buildings and create streets etc.

If you are very good in 3d modeling use"3DS MAX 8"or else you can build structures using 'ARCHICAD 9".
I donot think there is better than the two.
I myself doing/practicing walk-through Animation using the latest soft wares of the above integrally.
good luck.

You are going to need to get into 3d somewhat, the level would be determined by the quality you want...

You can get Bryce 5 for $20 from daz3d, Carrara 3 from purplus for $40, or Wings3d for free, but you will STILL need a renderer (thats what produces the "output")... The free ones arent that good.

Youre going to have to commit some time to this project, in learning and in "doing", beware, and "on a good note", lol, best of luck :)
