lollipop, or lolly, is a type of confectionery consisting mainly of hardened, flavoured sucrose with corn syrup mounted on a stick and intended for sucking or licking. In many regions of the United States (primarily the South and Midwest), the term "sucker" is used interchangeably with or instead of "lollipop." In these areas, the term "lollipop" is often applied to candy that is disc-shaped, while "sucker" is applied to candy that is spherical. Lollipops come in a variety of flavors from the traditional cherry, grape and orange to the more daring watermelon and green apple. With numerous companies producing lollipops, the candy now comes in dozens of flavors.

They're both hard candy. Either can be striped or solid in color. The difference I say is in the word Sucker or Lollipop. A flat and round candy on a stick or looped holder is a lollipop. Whereas a round ball on a stick or looped holder is a sucker. My reasoning is that a round ball can be placed inside the mouth easily and sucked on. And a round flattened candy is sometines too large to fit in the mouth and is more easily licked than sucked on until it is small enough to fit in your mouth. It's just how I would differentiate between the terms. Like the difference between a coupe or sedan. Or motorbike or motorcycle. Pretty insignificant differences but different nonetheless.

I always think of a sucker as one of those ones that come with the stem in a loop for lil kids, to keep them from choking on it or something. Lollipops, to me, should have great flavors, so they aren't cheapo brands. Tootsie pops are my #1, blow pops are great, dum dums of course, the expensive fundraiser ones that have twisted flavors like banana split and rootbeer float are way enjoyable, and even the ones you sometimes get at the bank... but only the square ones. Anything else is just a sucker! ;)

if you bite it or lick it, it's a lollipop
if you suck on it, it's a sucker.
just kidding...
same thing; sucker is an old name for it
also, i think a sucker might technically be for the flat ones, while a lollipop refers to the spherical shape. i think.

I think a lollipop and a sucker are both the same thing. Like soda is the same thing as pop. They're both nicknames and such.

I've always used "sucker" to refer to any candy on a stick. I use "lollipop" to refer specifically to the rainbow spiral candy on a stick.
