To be more specific. Is playing a friendly game of cards for some money between friends illegal or is it ok as long as there is no rake of the pot?

In almost every state it is legal as long as the people involved are friends that know each other away from the poker table and no rake or house profit is taken.

it shouldn't be illegal if it's just a friendly game, but then again I don't live in New York, so you probably shouldn't listen to me.

technically its illegal
but the cops wont really care unless you are playing for big money or at a place where the house takes a cut
