I am not a real fan of granite but it seems like this is about all you see now. I'm building a new home and am trying to decide which surface (sink stains/scratches) will wear better. I haven't lived with either one but mainly don't want to "baby" the counter material . . . just use the heck out of it? Any recommendations from someone who's lived with granite or another surface?

I don't really care about budget as a first issue. This will be my last home so I want something I can use with not having to worry about getting stains or scratches. I'm just kind of sick of the granite look. I do want some thing like that . . . but nt granite. I want a continuous surface (no grout of course) that wears really well, doesn't scratchy, is not porous and is easy to keep clean. So briliiant people . . . what would be the best choice for me? Thanks much.

I was in the same situation three years ago when I remodeled my kitchen. Granite was/is all the rage, but I didn't want to seal it every 6-12 months. My brother had Corian installed six months prior and told me not to use Corian. Corian scratches, has to be sealed and showed wear and tear. So after a lot of research, I decided on Silestone (quartz) countertops. They don't need to be sealed, don't show scratches, won't burn/scorch and clean up easily. My countertops are 3 years old and look just as beautiful as the day they were installed. I recommend Quartz highly.

I have absolute black granite and love it. There was tile on the kitchen counter before and it was a nightmare! I could never keep the grout clean and constantly had to wipe it with window cleaner to keep the shine. I use the heck out of my kitchen being a gourmet chef and the granite takes my abuse. You can cut on it without scratching it, put items right out of the oven or hot off the stove right on it and nothing happens.

In the housing market in which I'm located, granite really adds value to the house over anything else and it shows in the selling cycle. Homes with granite just sell faster, for more, my real estate friends tell me. I've also put travertine in the bathroom which takes a lot of abuse, too.

It pretty much depends on budget, and how long you expect to own the home. Granite, etc. like many other products is trendy, and is cyclical in popularity. Certainly it may last forever, unless you live on a fault line, but it's extremely expensive, and as ones own tastes and decorating ideas are cyclical, it may not be your best option.

I most enjoy the composists such as "Corian" and it's just a personal choice, no attack on stone.

I also install tile, mica, hardwoods, etc. for counter tops. I suggest all are adequate.

Quartz is a better alternative, it's less porous. Check out this website below:

The room designer is fun too.
