Oh I do !!!
Along time ago all the dogs were at the annual dog party --and just as we have to check our hats and coats at the door ? The dogs always had to check in their tail so they weren't knocking things off the tables when they wagged --Well this one year a huge fire broke out and in the rush to have the building evacuated all the dogs rushed by and just grabbed a tail--so to this day every dog is constantly searching for the right one!!
Love to all the critter lovers out there God Bless our four leggers and feathered and scaled creatures too

The same thing we do when we look at a face. Every dog has and anal gland that secrets an odour unique to the dog. So when the dog smells he is basically asking that other dog's name. Of course it tells the dog other things as well such as health, reproductive status, and sex. It may seem a little too personal by human standards, but it is normal dog behaviour. It is part of socialising your dog to let him/her sniff other dogs.

They are not searching for anything...but this is their way of greeting, if it is a male or female, just to find out where the other dog has been, and it could be for many other reasons that we do not know of yet!

They can tell a LOT! They can tell how old the dog is, whether male or female, neutered or not, whether dominant or submissive, healthy or not, whether it's scared or playfull... all because of hormones. They have a whole ritual to figure out who's the boss in the situation.

They're just checking each other out, dogs rely quite a bit on their smell to tell them things. The sex of the other animal, if it's in heat or not, ect.

its just like people shaking hands. sniffing e/o's butts is a way of saying, "how do u do?" in doggie world. it also detects their different scents.
