It often takes many many months to find a medication that works with your individual body chemistry, but the key is to keep trying no matter how long it takes. It is difficult, because at the wrong dosage of the antidepressants make your symptoms worse before it makes them better. (For example 175 mgs of effexor may make you feel worse, but once you reach 225 mgs it can be like someone flicked a switch and you feel like your old self again). Once you feel like your old self for at least a year your dosage of the antidepressant can be gradually reduced over a period of many months. If you reduce it gradually over many months you won't suffer the withdrawal that comes with many of these medications. At that point you may consider yourself cured, but depending on what caused it in the first place, you may relapse.
Too many people give up on a medication before they give it a chance. When a medication is making you feel sick and the doctor increases your dose, your may think the doctor just doesn't get it, but if you stick with it, it will be worth it. It is so difficult because it may mean putting pills in your mouth every day for 3 months that make you feel terrible before you feel better. It may also be the case that after 3 months you have to start all over again and try a different medication.
Also the medication may have side effects that interfere with your sleep or make you even sleeper, so you may need to take additional medication to help with that.
Everyone's body chemistry is a bit different, and it is a fine balance. Many people have such strong opionions about these medications depending on how much they took and for how long, and it is too bad because it scares people away from listening to their doctor and sticking with a medication.
If you are severely depressed for many years, giving up a year or two to try these medications to find the right one is difficult, but is a small price to pay if you can find one that allows you to enjoy the next 30-50 years of your life.
Although some people can eventually wean off the medication and be cured, severly depressed people that have been depressed for a number of years may take a lot longer (indefinately) before they can start decreasing the medication dosage.
And if you are severely depressed, and you are worried about these medications shortening your life, remember that 30 good years are better than 32 depressed years.

Some depressions can be cured, and some are chronic, and can only be managed. If a depression is situational--that is, caused by some occurance, that might be cured with time and treatment. Examples of situational depression would be a death, losing ones job, anything that upsets your being, basically, rocks your world! However many, many depressions have no rhyme or reason for their cause, and might last for 6 months to forever! There is just no way to know, since there is no "cause" to "fix"...treatment is often necessary, whether it's psychotherapy, or drug therapy, or a combination of both...but it IS treatable, and it's important to always remember that there IS HOPE!!

There has to be a cure for depression because a lot of people over come it. I know I went through a stage of depression and I don't know if it is the same but to overcome it I did a lot of praying, a lot of mediating, and I did a lot of evaluating in my life. I had to evaluate what was making me depressed and when I found out what it was I had to let it go. I did relaxation and breathing exercises and it actually worked.

I used to be very depressed as a teenager. I used to cut myself and I tried suicide a few times. I thought I needed therapy, but everyone thought I was crazy. I found Jesus, when I was 17 and my life has changed forever. I believe he was my cure. But if you decide on something else just be careful if you get on those funky meds, because they turned my best friend into a freakin zombie. And if you get a min, maybe try God for a few...hey...it's free and confidential.

Depression, it is a line that slips off the tongue all too readily when we are bored or unhappy. But most of us, when we say that, do not mean we are clinically depressed, possibly wanting or needing treatment.
Depression - the blues can hit us all from time to time, as financial, emotional or work problems hang over like a dark cloud. In the long term, if the problems are not resolved, depression lowers the immune system, leaving you prone to a spiral of worstening mental and physical health.
Anxiety is a normal response to danger. Anxiety is abnormal when its severity is out of proportion to the threat of danger or when it outlasts the threat. Anxiety mood is closely coupled with somatic and autonomic components, and with psychological ones.
Depression is a normal response to loss or misfortune. Depression is abnormal when it is out of proportion to the misfortune or unduly prolonged. Depressive mood is closely coupled with other changes, notably a lowering of self-esteem, self-criticism, and pessimistic thinking.
While tending to the patient's psychological needs, don't forget her physical needs. If she's too depressed to take care of herself, help her with personal hygiene. Encourage her to eat. If she's constipated, add high-fiber foods to her diet; offer small, frequent meals; and encourage physical activity and fluid intake.
The good news is that almost 80% of depressed people get better with treatment.

I don't believe there is a cure, but you can be treated...but I have my own personal cure, I believed in myself, and I have become better, so if you believe in yourself, things will get better...Take it one day at a time!!

Not that I'm aware of, but there are medications that will help with the problems you're having. See a local therapist and speak to him/her about possible anti-depressants that would be suitable for you.
