Alexander Graham Bell, when he invented the telephone. He had poured acid on his hand while working on an experiment. He had been working on a system for his wife, who was deaf, so that she could hear him. While both his mother and his wife were deaf, he hoped to one day eliminate hereditary deafness from the population.
That was March 10th, 1876.
He was a Scottish immigrant who came to Canada and then later moved to the US. He also went on to invent a lot of other things. One of which was the metal detector.

Alexander Graham Bell on the first phone call.
The Simpsons use this as a joke, Mr. Burns answers the phone "hoy hoy" which is the way Bell wanted people to say hello, as on a ship. Burns once called to the outer office "smithers, come here, I want you". They don't miss a trick on that show! ! !
