Quem é? = Who is it?
Quem é esse/essa = Who is that (m/f)?
Quem é aquele/aquela = Who is that (m/f)?

The first that means someone who is closer, the second is someone who is farther away from you. In my opinion, if you dont know which to use, go with the first, it is more common.

Quem é essa? (referring to a female)
Quem é esse? (referring to a male)

Edit--- Rafa below...

I am Brazilian as well and if you are pointing at someone at a distance... if it is a male it is quem e aquele, if it is a female it is aquela. Quem e este is when the person is near you... for example a photograph... that would translate to "who is this"

The example I give above is an informal but more widely used form of asking "who is that/this" But you must use the male and female suffix.

I'm brazilian, so I can tell you. It's: Quem é este? [kêm è êstê] or Quem é aquele? [kêm è àkêlê]

(belive me, some of them translated on web sites)

[desculpa serveduphot, não quis criticar ninguém.]
