It all really depends. Personally I don't care for gin- it smells too much like pine trees for me. (Which is to be expected, as it is made from juniper berries.) I prefer vodka martinis, either just a little bit dirty (a splash of olive juice) and garnished with an olive, or with a twist (of lemon)...
Whichever you choose, spring for good liquor, since a martini doesn't have juice, sugar or other mixers to mask the flavour of the vodka or gin.

I tend bar and the trand right now is for flavored vodkas and flavored martinis- like the green appletini, the cosmopolitan and others, but the classic martini is gin/ vermouth and you really should use a good gin. No name or low end gin does not make for a good tasting martini.

Gin is the traditional liquor used in Martinis; but, my preference of Vodka. While gin tastes good, I find it rough. Whereas Vodka is smooth; and, it has the ability to sneak up on you. All Martinis should have a splash of Vermouth to smooth out the rough edges.

All martinis are made with gin.

The drink known as a vodka martini is not actually a martini in the same way that peanuts are not nuts.

Gin with a zest of lime sound tremendous! even if, i doesn't call that I martini. The classic martini is in simple terms vodka, dry vermouth and an olive....i turned right into a pro bartender! hehe...

My preference is gin, because it has very complex flavors all on its own. (to me, vodka tastes and smells like rubbing alcohol)
For the most primo gin martini, skip the vermouth (splash cheap white vermouth into expensive delicious gin? barbarous!) and use Tanqueray No. 10 gin. Absolutely exquisite botanicals.

Enjoy.

Real martini use gin. If you don't like bitter, use vodka.
