It is the Holy Spirit (not Sprite - thats a drink)..Jesus after His resurrection sent the Holy Spirit to be with His church and His people to guide them in all He said. The Holy Spirit is the 3rd person of the Blessed Trinity (God). There are numerous gifts of the Holy Spirit and one of them is the speaking in tongues, however not everyone is given that gift. There are other gifts such as wisdom, discernment, counsel, fortitude, understanding, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first truths of eternal glory. The fruits of the Spirit are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control and chastity. And Love is the fulfillment of all our works.

If you are meaning Holy Spirit; the purpose is to make your life worth living and to save yourself from your sins. The Spirit is part of the Trinity that represents our Holy Father who can wash away all of our sins thru his blood.
Depending on your religion, not all believe you have to speak in tongues to receive the spirit. Tongues is a gift and the bible talks about speaking in tongues and that the speaker doesn't know what he is saying but there should be a translator that can't speak it but understands.
I have been "saved" but have not spoken in tongues. I know someone who was worshiping together with a group and had heard tongues being spoke before but didn't have any opinion of it one way or the other. While they were praying he one of the group singing praises and poetry that he had never heard before and he repeated it. Afterward the group realized he was actually translating one of the others speaking in tongues.

No... you can't "catch" it to speak in tongues. The whole speaking in tongues happens when people get into a trance, or are in some kind of hypnoticism. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity... the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is one in the same...

It is the teacher aspect of God. It is also to be here during this administration of God to comfort us and to convict us of being off target, or (Sin) if you prefer. The Holy Spirit will envelope you in baptism that is actually administered by Christ. when this happens, it can manifest as tongues, but will manifest in many ways, if you are willing, (free will). If you surrender to the lead of the Holy Spirit, you will operate under the anointing of God and be used as a vehicle for God's message here on Earth. Once again you must be willing. After you truly experience the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, you will never be the same and if you should slip back into your old nature, the Spirit will remind you that you are off target. As a comforter He will be with you in all of your learning and discipleship. It is a very important part of your walk with God since this is the Holy Spirit administration. The Old Testament times were the administration of the Father. When Jesus walked the Planet, it was the administration of the Son, and right now this moment it is the administration of the Holy Spirit, right here on Earth. This is the final administration of God before the return of Christ to be King of Kings.

I really wish people would learn to spell.
The Holy Spirit is the breath of god. It is the word of god. In the Bible, it is called Wisdom. The Catholic Church changed Wisdom from female to male. The Hebrew word is Shakinah. The Shakinah is an ancient goddess. Shakinah means wisdom.
When god 'spoke' creation into existance, the breath of god was the holy spirit. The holy spirit caused existance to happen. It did the work. For instance, god provided the clay and the writing instrument, and the Holy Spirit did the creating.
Anyone speaking in tongues is having a mental fit. Their brain crossed wires.

The purpose is; the Bible says that without it no one can enter the 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Speaking in tongues (according to Acts 2) is the 'Evidence' of recieving the Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit).
Please visit; www.upci.org and find a Church near you, then you will know!! God Bless, spknarr Conyers, Ga.
PS: Don't pay attention to those who poke fun at your spelling, or the Holy Ghost. God Would not approve!!!

Actually speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Not everyone does it who "catches" it. The Holy Spirit was sent to comfort and encourage us. He has been around since Genesis. I have a long list of scripture references, unfortunately they are in my Bible at home. I would be happy to share. The Holy Spirit guides us if we let Him in our heart. I know this is short and simplistic but I hope it helps.
