Reading from Mormon Internet sites and listening to a Mormon tell you about their Church can be confusing. Mormon have some beliefs that are NOT Biblical and other beliefs that make them non-christian.
I will number them
1. They believe we all preexisted in heaven before we were born. This in it's self is not terrible it just isn't a biblical teaching.
2. Jesus is a created Being that became a god. This is serious heresy and the main reason they are non-christian. This is not the Jesus reveled in the Bible it's another Jesus.
3. They believe we can't be saved by faith alone that we must do works of the Law. This is serious again and another reason they are non-christian.
4.They believe that there are 3 gods that we should worship. This is big time heresy. The Bible is very clear that there is only one God.
5. They believe that unless they baptize a person they can't get "back" into God's presence. Baptism is a work of the LAW and
isn't a requirement for salvation.
6. This is huge...They believe that God lied. that His promise that he would never leave us or forsake us yet they say that his church died away after the death of the Apostles.
7. They except extra-biblical revelation putting their Book of Mormon, their Doctrine and Covenants, and their Pearl of Great Price on equal authority with the Bible. This should be self explanatory.

I'd like to look at Jim's points and offer an explanation. I am in no way looking to Bible bash or anything, just trying to shed some light on this situation. Thanks Jim for putting this response out in the first place. It looks like you've at least done some research instead of just quoting false anti-Mormon literature.
1. They believe we all preexisted in heaven before we were born. This in it's self is not terrible it just isn't a biblical teaching.
Yes, it is true that the Bible does not necessarily cover this, but that doesn't make us non-Christians. (By the by, I'm going off the definition of Christian as anyone who believes that Christ is our Savior and that he made it so we can return to heaven by paying for our sins)
2. Jesus is a created Being that became a god. This is serious heresy and the main reason they are non-christian. This is not the Jesus reveled in the Bible it's another Jesus.
Yes the Mormon religion does believe that Christ is our brother... God's only begotten son. However to say he wasn't a God, I've actually had my Seminary teacher counter that, saying that even without a body, Christ could reach a God-like state (just like the Holy Ghost) but came down for a body and to atone for our sins. So even though we do believe that Christ, Heavenly Father, and the Holy Ghost are three different beings, it doesn't mean that we don't believe that Christ isn't a God.
3. They believe we can't be saved by faith alone that we must do works of the Law. This is serious again and another reason they are non-christian.
Umm... I believe in the Bible it states something to the effect of "Faith without works is dead." You can't just say "I believe" and then all of the sudden be saved. You still have to live your life like you believe. Most Christian religions teach you should live righteously, correct me if I'm wrong on that point.
4.They believe that there are 3 gods that we should worship. This is big time heresy. The Bible is very clear that there is only one God.
This is again not true. We do believe there is more than one God, however our Heavenly Father (our Creator) is the only one of the three that we are supposed to worship.
5. They believe that unless they baptize a person they can't get "back" into God's presence. Baptism is a work of the LAW and
isn't a requirement for salvation.
We do believe that baptism is a saving ordinance. However we don't believe that you're going to hell if you don't get baptized. Those who do not receive the oportunity in mortality will receive the oportunity in the next life to accept the Mormon religion, or so we believe.
6. This is huge...They believe that God lied. that His promise that he would never leave us or forsake us yet they say that his church died away after the death of the Apostles.
We do not believe that God lied. We do believe that God still helped those during the apostacy who were righteous and believed in Him, but there just wasn't a true church upon the face of the earth at that time.
7. They except extra-biblical revelation putting their Book of Mormon, their Doctrine and Covenants, and their Pearl of Great Price on equal authority with the Bible. This should be self explanatory.
Again it is true that we do consider the Book of Mormon, the D&C and Pearl of Great Price as scripture that is equal to the Bible. We also accept living prophet's counsel as scripture equal to the Bible. I'm sure you're referring to the scripture that says "and no one shall add or take away from this book." (parphrased) in Revelations. However, you have to realize that Revelatopms wasn't written last chronologicallu... so every book within the Bible that was actually written after Revelations is also false? That's what I'm hearing. The Mormon religion believes that verse in Revelations is referring to only the book of Revelations.
I hope this helps. Again Jim, thank you for actually taking the time to discover these instead of just throwing out the old "Mormon's are polygamists" thing on us again. I appreciate your insight and hope I've been able to at the very least clarify your concerns about us not being fellow Christians because that is the biggest insult in my opinion, to not be considered a Christian when I am. :)

To non-religious folk they both seem typically religious. To religious folk, the Baptist seem okay-just a little too tight. But the Mormons seem very strange. The Mormons do not use the Bible, they use the book of Mormon. It has had three major changes doctrinally in the last 100 years or so. The Baptist use the Bible and believe it the final word from God. The Baptist and Mormons claim to worship the same God, but if your examine Mormon literature you will find a grave difference. All Mormons I have met are of the highest moral character and love their family. I would have no problem with a Mormon neighbor, although I would not want his religion.

This is a very difficult question to answer here and during the time I have. I suggest you go to the sites below.
In a nutshell, the LDS church is based upon the early Protestant church (1800s) and it's primary precepts are that JC came to the new world after he arose and passed on his "word" to the incas, indiands, etc, and that Joseph Smith found some mystical golden tablets with the help of an angel and "translated" them.
The silliest part of this is that the book of mormon is written in the "King James English" that the NT and OT were written in, rather than straight English.

Mormon's not only believe in the Bible it is taught doctrinally in 2 of every 4 years of study (with the Book of Mormon and Church History/Doctrine and Covenant's being taught the other 2 years) - I believe if you attend any LDS Church this Sunday for Sunday School you will see that the Gospel Doctrine class is in the middle of the Old Testament. The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible not a replacement -

Here are the basic beliefs of the Mormon faith:
1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
3. We believe that through the atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
-Joseph Smith
As far as the differences between Mormonism and the Baptist faith. To be honest I don't know enough about the Baptist faith to point those out, and I wouldn't want to speak out of ignorcance, lest I insult, or misrepresent. So I'll leave that to someone else.
