I'm a teen and the popular people are usually the ones who are stupid, act like the class clown, and just act up, so I advise you to be yourself and be sociable so people will get to know you for who you are rather than some mask you're hiding behind and you'll get to know others better. Smile, be kind, but not too kind, you don't want to get taken advantage of (THAT STINKS). Just start a conversation with somebody and you might make a new friend. You can help people out, but if someone says "I just need an answer to #8, and they ask you for your homework paper, they're going to copy all the answers. There are groups of kinds of teens. Just be yourself. People will or won't like you for who you are, but hiding behind a mask is even worse because when you reveal your true personality, your popular friends will probably drift away. In Junior High and High School, most girls go out with the cute guys, but as you get into college and maybe a little older, you're more distinguished by your personality. There are exceptions.

Confidence. Just be yourself, and if you don't know who you are, find out. Usually if you like people, they will like you back as long as you don't act needy. That's pretty universal. People like to be around people in the Middle East, and it's not so much about being the leader or the most popular as it is being social. Just be a loyal friend and be nice to everyone.
Also remember that people don't like to tell you "no" there, or sound negative in refusing you. They would rather stand you up than tell you they would rather not meet you somewhere, for whatever reason, or if something important comes up, they just might not come. Start early trying to figure out if your friends really mean what they say or if you are forcing them into a situation and they feel they need to be diplomatic. Even then, don't be offended if you are stood up either...it's not meant to be an insult like it would be in another culture. Just take it as it comes and assume the best. That's also why everyone has a cell phone.

Be yourself and be confident. Those two things will last after you are out of school, anything else is a waste of time. More than likely you won't know many, if any, of those people in 5-10 years, so who cares. It's not like anyone goes around saying, "I was so cool and popular when I was in 8th grade." If they did that, then they would most certainly not be cool or popular. So, just be yourself and enjoy it.

I'm confused. It's a British school in the Middle East? Talk about culture shock.

DigDug is right.
Be yourself, but be friendly to all, until you figure out who is your
enemy, or at least who is not friendly toward you. Your true friends (this will take some time/maybe a few months) will eventually be clear to you, and who cares what the rest think? If you have a handful of friends who like you as you are, you are very rich. I used this strategy when I was a schoolboy, and it worked very well.
All the best to you, my friend.

Be yourself. Don't try to be someone else and don't worry if some people don't like you. Even Jesus had people who didn't like Him and He was God on Earth! If God can't please everyone all the time, you're not going to either, so don't worry about it.
Whether their opinion of you is good or bad, it'll never make a difference in your bank account! Five years from now, no one's going to remember who was popular in grade eight. Just be yourself, do your homework and have fun.

Be yourself. Even if you are a bit quirky, people will like you better as YOU than if you are pretending to be someone else. And honestly, it doesn't matter how popular you are in the end. I am much more popular now (six years after high school) than I even was in high school.

The same thing it takes to be "popular" in any other school: work on becoming the best "you" you can be. You'll become popular with the people who like that person you're becoming. The others are people you probably wouldn't like anyway.
