I have a ***** that was just bred for the first time (she's almost 4) via artificial insimination. We did an ultrasound at around 40 days and the vet didnt see any pups but her uterus is getting bigger and she has mammery developement along with several other signs of pregnancy as well as gaining 12 lbs. Bailey has had false pregnancies before but never anything close to this. Can the ultrasound miss puppies? Could there still be one or two pups in there?

They checked for fluid in her uterus and a few other things and the vet doesn't see anything abnormal. Her overies are systic (sp) which from what I understand they have to be to maintain a pregnancy, her uterus walls are thickened, ect. I dont know what's going on she has had false pregancies before but they have never been anything like this. Would her uterus grow if she was having a false pregnacy?

she was checked for pyometria/uterine infection, the vet looked for fluid in the uterus and there was none.

It can sometimes be difficult to see pregnancies via ultrasound, but to still show signs at 40 days is a pretty good sign that she is pregnant.

At 40 days, the pups would normally be quite visable via ultrasound. Is there a chance she could have pyometria/uterine infection or some hormonal thing going on along with false pregnancy? I'd have the vet do another ultrasound at this stage of the game and while she's there, have him examine her for other possible reproductive problems as mentioned above.

Pregnancy diagnosis

1. Ultrasound scans. From day 21 to day 28, counting from the first coitus, it is possible to confirm gestation through an ultrasound scan diagnosis. It's much recommended.
2. X-rays. A week before your dog gives birth, approximately day 51 counting from the first day, an X-ray should be made to confirm the number of fetuses, and at the same time, know their position. The x-ray should not be performed before day 51 since it could affect fetal development.

Yes, it sounds like you may to be getting ready for puppies.
The uterine horn in a dog is very long and it is hard to ultrasound it well.
Instead of a nice neat lump of uterus, as in humans, they have two elongated horns. Here is a pic>

If she had a false pregnancy, her symptoms might be similar, but not likley to incude the swollen vulva and the 12 pound weight gain.

You would be safest to have the vet take another look, as, if they couldn't find any the first time, she may have 1 or 2 very large pups, what with the 12 pound gain, and as boxers are large headed, she may need a C-section.

I would have him/her take a look at about 55 days.

I would also take her back just before whelp to have her checked again. By that time, the pups would have a harder time hiding. At 40 days, especially if there are only one or two pups, they could easily hide from the ultrasound. I've seen false pregnancies, but never one with all of these signs.

Just to make you feel better, last year's litter with my Boston Terrier female taught me this lesson. I took her in on schedule, four days before whelp, to check on the skull-size of the puppies like I always do. They said they were fine, and they saw three puppies. Four days later, we had six puppies. Ha! Even at that stage, there were three of them still hiding... I've had them miss one before, but not three.

Chetco is right, as always. Make sure you watch this one. If there is only one pup, or two pups, they may be quite large.

Best of luck to you!

A ultrasound can be wrong in humans so I say yes. Could she have a growth or tumor?

Just watch and wait.. that is the best thing to do at this point. keep feeling her tummy if you feel the puppies moving they will be here in a few days (or at least that's what happened to mine)..ultra sound just like any other machine is only as good as the person using it...

OF COURSE IT WILL !!!
if there were puppies missed, or said there were'nt any--that falls back on the person running the test-not the dog !
i think if i were you--i'd find a new vet !! yes, it sounds to me like she could have a problum.
