That is very sweet of you. You could always try to find a friend who could take him. If not go to the animal shelter and just explain your story and give them your info in case they do need to contact you.

I would highly suggest if you can not keep the dog is to:

1. First put a FREE AD in your local paper and say that you found a dog. Give a description, etc.. The dog may have gotten out and the owner is looking for it.
2. Contact your local vets. Better yet, take the dog to a vet (if it is a purebred - it should be a free visit) and ask for the vet to "scan" the dog to see if it has a microchip in place. That microchip will give the vet the name, phone number and address of the owner.
3. Contact your local police station and see if anyone has reported the dog lost.

If any of the above fails, I would seek out your local SPCA. Make sure they are an SPCA and not just your local, county dog pound. These dogs are put to sleep if they are not recovered, even if they are a good dog. SPCA shelters are non-kill shelters who will keep the dog no matter how long and provide with all the shelter, food, care it needs while there.

Last resort, If you don't have an SPCA shelter in your area, try to determine the dog's breed to your best of your ability. All dog breeds have private rescue organizations who will take the dog and put it in a foster home until adopted. (i.e. if it is a pug or looks somewhat like a pug, do a google search of "pug rescue" and see if there is one in your state). If there is not, these organizations have volunteers who will travel to pick up the dog at your home.

Good Luck!

I wouldn't take him to the pound at all. If you suspect that the dog had an owner, put up flyers and maybe an add in your local newspaper with a description of the dog and tell the general area in which you found him. If he had owners, I'm sure they are looking for him and miss him very much, especially if they have children, too. Attempt to find the owners (hey you might even get a reward) and if you don't put an add or flyer out saying that you have a dog for sale (or to give away whichever you prefer) and find him a good home if you can't keep him. There are definitely better options than taking him to the pound - try to find him a home. Perhaps you may even have a friend who can take him in.

you can take him to the animal shelter wich will put him to sleep if an owner does not claim him. You can go back to rescue him, but most likely you will have fees to pay in order to get him out. Your other option would be to take him to the Spca. Most of them are No kill shelters, but the downfall is they will not let you have the pet back after dropping him off. They will not even give you information on if the dog was adopted or not. I am not sure why they do this.. its kind of cruel , but its thier policy. If you can manage to keep the dog for a few weeks...why not try finding him a home with someone you know. Good Luck.

Maybe take him to a vet first, to see if he has a chip!

I'd definately say not the pound, see if a friend or relative can sit him while you look for the owners if you can't do it! Then take out an ad in the paper and put ads up at nearby stores (especially pet shops) and on nearby streets that you found a dog! Don't be too descriptive, so you can make sure you have the right owner!

Good luck and as a dog owner I can appreciate what you have done already and are trying to do!

How do you know for sure that he was abandoned. Maybe he's just lost. My neice lives in Florida and her dog ran off and now my neice can't find her. She's a very smart dog but they recently moved and she had a friend watching her until they got everything done. I think the dog ran away because she didn't know the girl and was looking for her master.

If you take the dog to the pound and no one pays to adopt him then he will be put to sleep. They will not just give the dog back to you and most of them do not contact you to tell you that they are going to put the dog to sleep either. You need to try to find the owner or someone that will take him if you don't want him to be killed.

Dog pounds are very full with strays.if the dog is sickly, diseased, old and frail, chances are they will euthanize(put down). But if you have an ideawhat breed he has in him, you can find a rescue organization for that breed. Also do not put in paper because there are a lot of people who will sell him to a lab for research.Best thing is to tell all your friends that you are looking for a good home.Clean him up nice, and take a pic of him and sometimes this will get him a nice family.Dont forget to mention his good nature, such as playful, good with kids, responds happy. Try not to get too close because he is probably doing the same and it will be hard to separate you both.Dont keep too long.Good luck

Thank you for rescuing a dog that's either lost or abandoned.
Most pounds can check to see if it's microchipped in order to find its owner.
I've been in this situation many times myself. I usually take the animal to the pound. They usually have a policy that states how long they will keep the animal. If the pound isn't too full, it will do all it can to find a home for the dog.
They should only ask you where you found the animal and your name and address.
You ARE doing the humane thing by taking it to a shelter.

A regular pound will put him to sleep in about 2 weeks if he's not claimed. You can however leave your name and number. they will most likely call you if you request it. The humane society isn't suppost to euthenize any healthy animal. they just keep him until he gets a home. Remeber the humane society does charge an intake fee. A flyer would be a good idea or a small cassified in the news paper.

Pleeeeeease, people! Do not take any animals to your local animal shelter! They will euthanize the dog after 3 days. If you take that dog to the animal shelter and no one claims him, believe me, you won't get him back without paying! They will charge you an adoption fee, even though you are the one that brought him in. Call around and find a no kill shelter, like the SPCA.
