this is the smartest and well informed question I have yet to answer ... More we need more knowledge from people with sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOCIETY IS SAFER WITH CRIMINALS IN JAIL
The population of the United State's prisons and jails increased by 900 inmates weekly during 2003 and 2004, or from a total of 2 million to 2.1 million prisoners during a one year period, as reported by the federal Bureau of Prisons on April 24.
The social activists, "enlightened" multiculturalists and civil-rights extremists who are already whining about the recent increase in our prison and jail populations should consider this: We are all so much better off for such judicial cleansing of our population. The Bureau of Prisons also clearly confirms that America's crime rate has steadily fallen over the past 10 years as its prison population has risen proportionately. With increasing numbers of felons receiving prison sentences, it is logical to assume that the incidence of felonies might fall. Until recent mandatory sentencing increases started, a high incidence of recidivism relentlessly stoked higher crime rates.
The proposal
Schwarzenegger, who this week signed legislation to reorganize the corrections system, plans to spend about $7 billion on youth and adult corrections. The state Department of Corrections budget is up $191.4 million from last year. The increase is largely due to an increase in the number of inmates -- projected to top 165,000 in the next budget year -- and a 5 percent raise owed to prison guards under a contract that was negotiated by former Gov. Gray Davis' administration. The increased spending comes as prison officials have notified lawmakers that spending for the current fiscal year will be $240 million over budget. The governor's proposal does not address how to fix the prison system's deplorable health-care operations, which a federal court judge has threatened to put in receivership. A court-appointed receiver would have the power to order additional spending by the state to improve medical care inside the state's prisons..

Yeah, that is an interesting thought, here is another: The government spends in excess of 30,000 a year to house a criminal and between 3,000-6,000 a year to educate a child. Too bad we couldn't spend more on educating our children and less on paying for the reprocussions of uneducated people that have to resort to crime to support themselves.(and yes I know there are some very educated people in prison, but that is not the norm)

another thing ironic... only the poor people go to prisons!!!
The poor have a better time surviving in prison because of this countrys ignorance of the min wage. That is why there is crime and drugs also, we need the power of UNIONs back into America. It will only become worse. We need to create jobs in America and Unions to protect us from min wage.

I say the let the harden criminals out and make them join the military and send them out as the front line and I say harded criminals meaning ones who have drug charges, child molesting and rapest, ones who have extended prison stays ones that won't be flight risks. Reform them in the military then ship them out instead of our teachers, police officers and the white collared worker, and blue. But of course that will never happen

Yes it is really ironic. Top rated criminals , gangsters , scamsters, etc. get 5 star treatment while their cases continue in courts for very long times. They get a great life in jail. Common people suffer the most.

They are secured to keep them away from us, who are free. What do you suggest, locking up all of us and letting them roam free.
I do understand though. They also have free room and board, free meals, weight rooms, libraries, college-level teachers, churches, and anything else they could possibly want while they're in there, all for free.
No wonder a lot of the people who have been in jail say they're not afraid of going back!

But think about it, if there is an attack, and the prison guards get killed, the prisoners would starve in there.

I don't think they would be able to feed themselves if everyone else was gone. They would just die slowly in a cage. I doubt if any surviving guards would free them. That's a terrible thought....interesting question.
