I do not know if it should be a requirement but a strong recommendation. My son is seven. Last fall he was taught sign language in school and yes, he knows sign language! He is also knowledgeable in Spanish as well as American English. I think being multi-lingual is a very good thing. Communication breaks down barriers and make room for better understanding...

Require? Why? For the remote possibility that one day a hearing person might need to talk to a deaf person? I'm 40 and don't know that I've ever even met a deaf person. No offence, I'm sure it's frustrating trying to communicate in the world, but frankly, mandating that schools teach it to everyone would be a waste of time and resources. I'd say the same if they decided to mandate Spanish but at least with Spanish, there's an ever growing possibility that we'll have to use it.

No schools shouldn't require that students take a certain language. I agree that it should definately be offered in school. We took American Sign Language in middle school for 4 years in our school system. It was great and we learned a lot.

The US caters to Mexicans, and I agree with you!! It was fortunate that when I was in the 2nd grade I went to a school with two boys who were deaf. I was fascinated by the beauty of the language and determined to learn it. I was very lucky, the lady who was their teacher was wonderful, she was willing to give up her time each day after school to teach me - she was the best teacher I ever had. (oops side trip down memory lane!) But I agree with you, and ASL should be at the very least offered in more schools. I moved around ALOT as a kid and was only taught in the 2nd grade by my own doing, no other school teacher would help teach me more - if it was taught at all.

It would be nice if more people learned it, maybe not require it, but give an extra credit or something. You are right though about the Spanish, it sure irritates me to have to press 1 for English.

Good idea. Multilingualism is a good thing, especially when the languages are not similar.
