Not close at all. People have been saying we are within 10 years of practical fusion power for 20 or 30 years now.

The petroleum companies invest heavily in the production of oil. If an idea that will threaten their interests comes up they either buy it and sit on it, that is for instance if their scientists cannot discredit it. Take hydrogen power which works by extracting hydrogen from water which was invented by several people about 30 years ago,. It was dismissed as illogical and dangerouse. Apparently the four stroke engine is antiquainted, but is still being used. When we run out of fossil fuels the most advanced engines will appear on the market.that is if you are still alive.

Last I heard they could only sustain it for a few seconds. In addition, the amount of energy needed to create it was greater than the energy it gave off.
We aren't any closer to nuclear fusion than Jules Vern was to actually flying to the moon.

We aren't very close to making a fusion reactor yet, much less being able to power cars and such with it. Let's see, how far into the future did Dr. Brown have to travel to get his fusion reactor to produce 1.1 gigawatts of energy he needed?

Fusion has already been sustained in experiments. But it took more energy than it gave out.

They are about to start building a prototype fusion reactor in France.
