I mean seriously, this is a standard response. "You need to read the bible." "You obviously haven't read the bible." "It's all in the bible."

I'd say about 60% of the time I get that answer. Not really here but whenever I discuss religion.

It seems only a minority are capable of thought and won't parrot the Bible. They realize that the Bible doesn't have the answers. It has stories, and you can learn some interesting concepts that apply to real life.

And how foolhardy is it to blindly look to the Bible for some mystical answer? Just pick a verse and apply it to your life. It's like shaking a Magic 8 Ball. Or reading what you want in a horoscope. The Bible didn't tell you the answer. You did. You interpreted the answer from reading it. It's not any different from i ching or astrology.

That's not to say that the Bible is useless, but it's not a magical book that tells you what you need to know. It tells you what you want to know. And that's only as reliable as you are.

As a Christian Pastor I agree with you.
Answering a question in that manner is the same as not answering it at all.
I personally think this is caused by the very fact that they know the answer is in there but they don't know where,
A lot of Christians treat the Bible like Prego spaghetti sauce it's in there they just don't know the ingredients themselves.

It's an easy answer for people who have nothing to back up their opinions. If they don't have a reason for disagreeing with you, they just tell you to read the bible so they don't have to explain themselves.

Once such answer is FAR too many.
I mean in what other situation would people direct you to read a book of outdated, bronze age jewish myths, instead of actually answering your question.
Anyone who does that is brain dead. In short, they are the perfect christian.

Ugh, a sickeningly large amount of times that I can't remember to count.

Especially frustrating when you are asking a question that (GASP!) asks people to think for themselves and come up with their own, personal response. *Sigh.*
