I have seen this behaviour in a young student. The school administrators were monitoring him for schizophrenia and autism.
The communication pattern you describe is abnormal. However, having said that, I also have met female adults who refer to themselves in the 3rd person, and they are neither schizophrenic nor autistic : they are childish. In my humble opinion, they have psychological issues which might benefit from treatment.
In any case, I think a psychological screening is needed for all of these cases. Family Practitioners can make the referrals for testing. Good Luck !

Are they seriously doing this often?

Remember in "Seinfeld", George sometimes talks about himself in 3rd person. Maybe the person thinks it is cute....

Not everyone is crazy. Lets hope your friend just thinks it is cute and they need to be told otherwise. If this is not the case, it can be a symptom of schizoaffective disorder. But don't try to diagnose it...just treat them like everyone else.

Has to talk about himself, because no one else does. and if they do talk about him, he does not like what is being said. So he says what he wants said about himself in a way that would sound repititive.

They either think highly of themselves, or they are a little emotionally scarred and need to place space between themselves and reality.
