Depends on your level of expertise and what you are wanting to do. Windows is easier and more friendly to the average joe... or julie. Linux is for more advanced users and offers them features they can appreciate.

Both are good at a lot of things so it's unfair to call one better than the other. Windows is good for a lot of things and so is Linux

Speaking as a Linux user, I disagree that you need to be an expert to use Linux. It's actually not that hard to learn in many cases.

There are versions of Linux which are very good and also easy to use. One such example is http://ubuntu.com

I guess it all boils down to which one the individual user prefers using after experiencing them both.

Linux is great for servers and as an internet computer, there are few viruses that affect it like with windows. Windows is good for gaming computers, mostly for the amount of software options. I prefer Linux also for stability, I ran a 64bit Suse Linux for almost a year and it never crashed.

Windows is user friendly, attactive GUI and easy to us. But Windows is MS product thus subjected to Crash without prior notice. MS products are not good with respect to security. But you get very good support from MS for Windows. It is expensive and the softwares like office are expensive.

Linux is the most secure OS so far. Now, it is user friendly not as much as Windows but Linux is user friendly. Its free and most of the softwares are free. But you do not get professional support of Linux because it is Open Source Code and free to use.

I personally prefer Linux than Windows but due to my job requirements I am forced to work on Windows. I agree today is window but tomorrow is Linux.

This all depends on what you want to use your computer for and what level your tech skills are.

In general:
Office/Internet non-tech -> Windows
Games -> Windows
other or tech -> Linux or Windows (your emotional preference)
(and ofcourse specialised applications require a certain operating system)
