However, Java development takes longer and doesn't perform as fast because it needs the Java Runtime to run on Windows, which is another layer to slow things down.

People choose Java who are anti-Microsoft, for various reasons. Java development can be done without paying for a integrated development environment. Notepad, a command prompt and the JDK (Java Development Kit) are all that's needed. While .NET requires Visual Studio, which is pricey.

Java is lower level. So if you're really into programming and not drag-and-droping, Java is for you.

There's still a fair amount of demand for Java developers because there's not many qualified developers.

If you get Java certified, you can find a job easily. While .NET developers usually are old Visual Basic or C++ programmers who are lucky enough to work for a shop that went .NET

Dear honey, at first you should compare j2ee and .net
Anyway, for large scale projects j2ee is the best choice but vice versa .net is better
