The most effective self-defense product? A good pair of running shoes honestly. I am a martial arts instructor and anybody worth their salt will tell you that in a real life situation your best defense is to run, in fact when most of the guys I know teach they advise their students to do as much damage as possible and then run.
And as far as a weapon goes, a stick is still a great weapon and is cheap, but remember violence has a tendency to escalate, so if you carry a stick, sombody else will carry a knife, carry a knife? they will carry a gun... can't escalate much past that on a 1 on 1 level.
If you want to carry somthing that you can use as a weapon keys are good, as is a baton of some sort, check local laws but I don't think a baton would be illegal in most places.
Good luck, and don't go looking for trouble, because when you do it tends to find you.

Wrong question...
Because it depends on what would be legal to carry where you live.
I have to agree with people who claim a quick departure being the best option. Sometimes, however, it is not available.
Taking some martial arts / self-defence classes is advisable. It would take years to teach you what you see in your off-the-mill Chinese Action Theatre (if you'd acheive that level at all!), but a few lessons could teach you the basics, i.e. how to get out of a grip, kick the attacker where it hurts, and open an escape route.
As for things you can get in a local gun shop - either a taser (electric shock utensil), or a gas cannister. Knives require extra training, and it's far too easy to actually kill someone with them. Batons, truncheons and clubs are big and difficult for everyday carry.
Personally, I do not trust a taser, but a pepper gas cannister (pay attention - peper gas, not a tear gas, Mace or something alike), since it works on drunks, junkies, and aggressive animals as well. And it saved me trouble once already - it sent two muggers on a quick run.
I'd happily carry a gun, but where I do live it's almost impossible to obtain a permit. Besides, should I had a gun, those muggers would be dead. Or at least severly wounded... which, as someone here said already, would mean more trouble than it's worth.

A good automatic pistol, but I would advise to look for work and company elsewhere because killing a moron is a lose-lose situation because the liberals will cry some poor person was a victim, even if he/she was ready to snuff out your life. Go figure...

the ability to run very fast. Or martial arts. There is no reason to need to carry a weapon, because it is just unnecessary to kill others even if they are trying to kill you.

Dazzling wit and a stunning repartee. If that fails you run like the wind. (Hey, it's worked for me!)

A gun. If you don't want to shoot someone, I have been told pepper spray works very well.
