Since I was about 11 EVERY SINGLE TIME my hands get wet, they bother me. Enough that if I don't use hand lotion I will go into a panick until I find some. It doesn't hurt, but the feeling is like my finger prints have doubled, and I feel like my skin went as dry as leather. I've gotten so bad that I DO NOT wash my hands at all during the day...no matter what. And if I know I'll be getting wet (shower or swimming) I make SURE I have lotion around. Even lotion doesn't cure it 100%, only time does that, and it's usually 30 minutes to an hour.
Any Dermatologists out there who have heard of a similar condition? I've had it for like 19 years.
I hate bathing my kids with rubber gloves. And, I would love the idea of actually wanting to go swimming. Right now when I hear swimming, all I think about are my hands.
It bothers my feet some too, but not nearly as bad. And if I put socks on and make my feet sweat, it's not so bad. Someone help!!

I know that this could very likely be a mental thing, but I would like to know if it might be a real problem before I made a decision.

I have been diagnosed recently with excema, but I didn't know that it could possibly cause this. Though, the excema, if that really is what it is, isn't on my hands. It just makes my legs itch like CRAZY with no visual reason, and then on my neck, and hip I get break outs that look like ring worm but the doctor said they were excema. I'm not sure though. But, the cream he gave me did work. Still, I don't know if that would be the cause of my hand problem. Something to consider though for sure!!

And it's 100% the water, not soap that causes this. I could just dip my hand into nothing but water, and it would happen.

Maybe chlorine/chemicals in water? I grew up with well water (was like spring water-not stinky or dirty) and never had problems with dry, itchy skin except maybe in winter time, but that's a given. When I moved to the city and started using city water, my skin became really dry and itchy regardless of season. And sometimes I get that creepy crawly feeling, you know like bugs are all over you. I moved to my current city location and hate, HATE the water. I'm in the shower and itch like crazy. I often wonder exactly what the city puts in its water. I've lived here for 5 years and we are almost to our 4th water faucet in the kitchen. The water has corroded every one! The last one ended up breaking off!! This current one has tiny holes that water leaks through when you turn it on.....hmmm after reading what I just wrote, I think I'm going to go have it tested.....

Is it the water or the soap that your using? Change to a mild free soap. One that is free of perfumes. I know I can not use the commercial soaps found in stores or gas stations as they aggravate the feelings I get in my hands. Like a paper dry feeling that is so uncomfortable. Ask your dermatologist to suggest a really good lotion for when you have to wash your hands. It's better to wash then not. You could be spreading colds or a virus to others if you don't wash. Buck up and take it and ask the lord to remove it from you. :)

"You're creating your reality right now by how you think" stop the incessant mental noise. Take your life back as the observer of your thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. You're the witnessing presence behind the thoughts, otherwise you wouldn't even know you were thinking. Become more present. Let stillness and calm once again be a part of your life. You are SO much greater than your thoughts. Your fingers wouldn't drive you crazy "IF" you weren't thinking about them. Your focused energy backed by emotion, in turn creates your reality. Be careful what you energize. In other words forget about your fingers. If your response to that is "Yeah right" we then know why your reality harbors this issue. It's natural to become more aware of your finger prints when you don't have lotion on them. I suggest maybe you just got used to the lotion, and need to get used to not having on the lotion once again.

Sounds like mild excema, which water will aggrivate, try going to a dermatologist. Oatmeal lotions/soap help with this.

My Mother has this same problem. water makes her hands so dry they crack. Dr. prescribed some steroidal cream but told her it was probably from bad eating habits. some sort of vitamin deficiency. and they get worse around her time of the month. make sure you use lotion that doesn't contain alcohol of any form cause it will just make your hands drier. and watch out for the perfumy stuff too. same problem. good luck!!

Could it be that you are allergic to chlorine or something in the soap or water? Also, this may be an obsessive - compulsive disorder vs. a physical disorder.
