If someone really had no reason to believe in God (thought it was a myth), or they weren't strong in their faith, would they really have to face eternal suffering for untold billions of years when they really didn't know any better?

Lets try that again:
Christians, can you tell me that someone who isn't saved really faces torture?

Some good points made thus far. Yes I have heard the word of God like pretty much everyone else. If I don't beleive or I'm questioning things its cuz I don't want to be played for a fool or be no better than an ancient pagan?

GOD is PURE LOVE, and alot of other thing's.
Befor those LOST People are told to Depart, they will get to feel the LOVE of GOD.
Brother and Sister, once you've had a REAL GOOD TASTE of that LOVE (GOD HIMSELF) you kick yourself for every thing you do that keep's you from feeling that LOVE.
There is nothing on this EARTH (sex, drinking, dope, power, money, greed etc) that can ever over-take the feeling's that you get from being close to GOD (LOVE).
That will be the worst part of Hell, knowing the LOVE of GOD then being seperated from it for a Long Time, that is Torture, and that is HELL. (I personally Believe that they will be thrown into the Lake of FIRE and CEASE to EXIST, and I think that would be called The MERCY of GOD).

I think the concept of eternal suffering or eternal bliss as a result of thoughts/actions during a finite (and thus infinitesimally less) period is very odd.

I also think the concept of needing to be a Christian (or any other faith) in order to receive the beneficial portion of this is inappropriate. There is a great deal of effort by some to spread word of their faith across the globe ... so that all have the opportunity to receive it. But even if they reached everyone currently living today, there are many who lived before who would not have this same opportunity.

So what happens to them? They aren't Christians ... they don't believe in Jesus or God ... they lived an died in a portion of the world where neither of these things existed to them ... so they are damned?

And what of the children who died very young.

Christianity has many pleasant aspects ... but for a religion teaching forgiveness and understanding ... it's a very non-forgiving and non-understanding religion in practice.

I don't think that when they die they face torture. I have seen that they live through it now. Every person I have ever meet that swears there is no god or higher being depending on the religion lives a life of fear. They are feel that everyone is out to get them. They trust no one. Most of them are depressed too. I don't know about untold billions of years of eternal suffering. But personally living my life in constant fear of everything would feel like a billion years.

Well I read your question then I read some of the answers and man what I read what not based upon the Word of God at all. Its based upon what they think. I dont much matter what we think but what God says. Hell is real and Hell is a seperation from God. Hell was made for the sinner who doesn't accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Read Luke 16:19-31. Some may say this is a Parable, but its a Parable with names, Parables was to teach us, by using examples. Well Jesus used Lazarus and a rich man. The rich man dies and is in hell. Read what the rich man says, then go to proverbs 1:24-33. Jesus never quoted any verse on hell as being a resort, He referred to it as Whaling and Gnashing of Teeth. Why would you cry and why would you gnash your teeth if you aint in pain. Hell is a firey pit. There is darkness there, such darkness that you cannot see. Imagine a cave when all lights are off. You will hear screams and crying of the sounds of Torture. Go through God's word and look at what God said on Hell. To the person who said we wouldnt want to see our kids in torture why would God. God sent His only Son to die for our sins. Now the ball is in your court, you either get saved and except what God did or reject it. For those who reject it, yes there is a hell.

Anyone who has been given the opportunity to accept God's truth, but doesn't, is going to have some real explaining to do when this earthly existence is complete.

God will cut some slack for those who, through no fault of their own, never learned the truth about him. But he will hold you responsible for everything that you should have known, or everything that you should have done.

Whether that means you'll end up in hell is not ours to decide. Jesus decides. He's the only one charged with that responsibility.

Let's just say that your chances of ending up in hell go way, way down when you faithfully become baptized into, and choose to practice the Christian (preferably Catholic) faith.

By the way, now that you've seen this answer, you can no longer claim ignorance. Sorry!

God gave all of us free will to make our own choices in life. There is a Heaven and a Hell and we all will be in one place or the other for eternity. God sent His only Son to die for our sins so we can have the choice of Heaven or Hell. If you choose not to believe it then you will find out what Hell is. I believe in God and His Son Jesus and I try to live by The Bible the best I can.

I could be wrong in believing in God and in His Son Jesus and in going to Heaven but think of it this way, If I am wrong I have nothing to lose but if I am right I have everything to gail. So if you believe in Heaven & Hell and are saved you also have nothing to lose but if you don't believe in His Son Jesus and you are wrong, WELL then you have everything to lose and that is losing Eternity in Heaven with Him. Yes we have a free will to believe whatever we want but there is a price to pay if you don't believe in Him.

I know He is real and I believe in what He says in the Bible. It has been proven time and time again that His words are true. So many things have already happened that He said would happen. So I choose to believe and be saved therefore I am safe in His arms when I breath my last breath here on this earth. Like I said we all will live forever and in eternity but which one, Heaven or Hell. the choice is yours.

I grew up going to Christian churches and I recall asking my mother your question when I was a little girl. I'd been told that only those who believed in Jesus could go to heaven and this worried me because I had many friends who were Jewish.

My mother's answer was one that stuck with me and probably has a lot to do with my thinking on the whole subject of religion.

She told me that she could not believe that a God who was good would send people to torture because they did not believe in him or in Jesus.

I do not believe that we were created by a force that is so evil it would punish us for not believing in something we cannot prove. It would not punish us for doubting. It would not punish us for not worshipping it.

I was baptized in a Baptist church when I was 11 and then again in a Catholic chapel when I was 21. I wanted very much to believe in something because I needed the comfort that can give you.

Now, I do believe that Jesus existed but probably not as more a son of God than any other man. He was a good man but one endowed with super powers? Probably not.

I believe that we are all part of the universe and each of us is a part of a whole which some would call God. I don't believe in hell. I think it's just something to scare people so they'll do what other people want them to do.

It's much nobler to rise above selfish instincts and do what is good and right just because it is good and right than to do it because some vengeful god might send you to hell.

So, at least in my opinion, nobody is going to face torture for not being "saved."

The only one who can save you is yourself.

Everybody has the "opportunity" to believe in God. Most people don't because its Inconvenient or will infringe upon the lifestyle they prefer to live, so they say to themselves and others "there is no God".. But deep inside they always have that doubt which they will continue to push down until it disappears. I know I did that myself for a whole lot of years. And if you stay in that state you have 2 big problems:

1. You can never experience true Joy.. I thought I had experienced joy with hundreds of sexual conquests and the incessant partying that I did but I was still empty even though I couldn't realize it. The more I come to know God, the more Joy I recieve and this is true joy not the momentary pleasures I knew before.

2. Yes without Christ you are condemned to an eternity in hell. But you, like I deserve it. We all disobey and dishonor our creator and deserve death, but he Sent his son to die in our stead. We can accept this gift , turn from our old sinful ways and ask His forgiveness. He WILL forgive you and give you the joy I mentioned as well as an eternity of peace love and joy, rather than Hell. God wants you to come and ask him for this forgiveness, he doesn't want to spend eternity without you, because he loves you and wants you near him. He saved and continues to save my life, and he can also save yours.

NO-O-O. IF someone doesn't know 'better', or they don't know God, they will not face any torture or eternal suffering.
But if they know God, but choose to not believe in Him, that is different. No man can serve two masters, therefore, this person has chosen to believe in Satan. Don't know what happens then - haven't been there. But just remember - God is a loving God, and He loves us all.

I don't really know. But I do that knowing of God and know god are the same. It is like knowing what ice cream is and tasting it. Or knowing what sex is or making love. A real relationship with God is so assume that anything less feels like torture.
