Or would it make more sense to allow the ones that have been here to get documents?

If they are able to obtain documentation within a given time period before termination, they should be allowed to stay. However, if the relationship is important and the employer wants to keep them that is totally up to him/her.

That's the tough one.

I come down on the side of letting the screened stay, but I am torn.

The thing is, legalizing those here won't satisfy corporate America's appitite for low wage workers, because their wages will go up. So there will still be pressure for the guest worker serf program, and we can expect any administration that secretly agrees with guest worker programs to not enforce whatever laws are put into place with great fireworks this year or next.

Also, if you asked me, all other things being equal, if I wanted someone here who hadn't thought it was ok to break the law, or wanted someone here who had, I'd go for the person who has what I consider to be greater integrity.

On the other side:

Their kids may have terrific integrity.

We have already started teaching them English and would have to start over with newcomers.

We didn't enforce our laws for a long time, and simple deportation is no longer the worst of what these people would be facing. Their lives are here.

I don't think we'd end up enforcing deportation orders for masses of the good sort. The French are already talking about hiding the children. If we accepted a guest worker program instead of amnesty, I think we'd end up with both.

I come down for screened amnesty once the border is secure, etc. But I am really pissed at our government for failing to enforce the laws until it came down to this choice.

Do you mean replace the FAKE documented workers with Undocumented workers or do we just change what we call them. I don't get it.

I refuse to use those politically correct sugarcoated terms for the criminals and the criminal actives of the illegals. They are breaking the law and MUST be kicked out. Doesn't matter how long or short they have been here. A criminal is still a criminal. Illegal still means illegal. They deserve neither to be reward nor our compassion. They have clearly demonstrated that they have no respect for our laws, our people, or our country. The sooner they are out the better

No, we should kick out all the illegals, after siezing any assets the acquired illegally, and then close the borders. We don't need guest workers, because there is no method to ensure they leave when their guest pass is complete.

The undocumented should be forced to leave, then try to get back in legally. Yes, give jobs to those who respect the rule of law.

Well, for how long should you be allowed to be a "guest"?? Guest workers are just that ... guests in this country .... they are meant to do a specific job for a specific time, and then go home! Get it? Personally I would hate to have a guest come and stay in my house indefinitely ... just because he's already overstayed his welcome, should I be forced to let him move in with me??

Neither is a good answer. Let the ones here now wear out their welcome and be caught and sent home or go home of their own volition. Any new guests should only be allowed in if they do it legally.

It would make more sense to just help the ones that are here. They probably have ties here like family.

send them home and let Americans take the jobs, and yes there are Americans who are wiling to work. I worked in the welfare office for 13 years and saw it every day
