my cat of 14 yrs passed away a month ago of liver disease from unknown origin. now my 8 yr pug is showing liver disease signs. i believe both frontline and andvantix are to blame. the vets don't like to respond to that assumption, just say that neither product is fda approved. i am extremely suspicious. how do i research my cause? have any other cases been linked with fact?

Liver disease can be from many different things, it is hard to say where it came from.

But I would NEVER put that crap one my dogs!

Frontline, I know for sure is FDA approved, and is one of the safest products that I knw of... I would recomend looking inot what you feed your animals, a lot of times, poor food quality, to much table food, etc. can affect the liver along with other values. If you directly call Merial(the company who makes Heartgard and Frontline) and express your concerns, I sure they would be more then happy to get you some litutature on the quality of Frontline. To my knowledge, there has not been any corellation with liver problems and FL. I am sorry to say, but I think you are generalizing a product. I could understand if you were saying, 'oh both my ani mals have fleas... I wonder if it is b/c of the FL?.. Okay, maybe, but Liver values can be affected in many ways by many things... Good Luck, and I am am sorry if I sounded harsh or attaking, I just got off third shift, and I really belive in the product, so I am voicing my convictions a little loud!

Well considering the liver filters out the blood, my first assumption would be the food you were feeding them; believe it or not! Were you feeding them the same food?

Dog foods bought in grocery stores and sometimes pet supply stores are junk. Just read the ingrediants on the back of the bag. Most of them are filled with by products which are merely the "junk" parts of an animals that can not be used in human consumption (feet, beaks, eyes, and other nasty body parts). Also, these foods are sometimes high in sugars, chemicals (for preservatives) and contain fillers that are not good for dogs to eat. If you can imagine a dog eatting the same thing, everyday that is not good for them, their body will start breaking down and start showing signs of pre-mature diseases, aging, etc...just like if a human was to eat bad food all the time, especially the same thing!

I would suggest you educating yourself in "holistic dog foods" and "natural diets" for dogs. Although sometimes medical conditions can not be reversed, I can almost bet that if you really took your dog's health and diet seriously going forward, you may delay the progress of the liver disease (if the vet did in fact confirm this diagnoises).

PS: I have been using Frontline for a long time on all of my pets and know over 3 dozen other people who do so and I have NEVER heard of it causing liver disease.

Good Luck!

I would think it would be something environmental. Frontline is a topical medication so would have to build up in good quantities to affect the liver. I would look first at the food and water they are getting, and possibly the soil in any outdoor areas where they spend a lot of time. I don't mean to sound like Erin Brokovich here, but if there is soil or water contamination, pets will usually become sick before humans will.

I don't think the FDA regulates frontline. the EPA does... that is kind of beside the point though. there is SOME agency that approved and tested it.

below is a link on the active ingredient in frontline. maybee this will help you. I think you should also look into what you are feeding them.

btw, I have never had any problems with frontline. my dogs are 7.

Are you using the right dosages for both of your pets. You should never use cat products on dogs & vice versa. Also they have amounts on them that tell you how much the cat or dog should weigh. Be sure you are giving them the right amounts & right type. I have used advantix for years & have never had any problems. It's hard when our animals die. You may have had bad luck & just had two animals that had liver problems.

My Mom's a vet and we use advantage on all of our pet and haven't ever had a problem. Frontline did make our pets sick though. They acted like they had the flu. 14 and 8 are getting pretty up there in years, it could be just age.

In the Diamond Dog Food recall last year, it was a problem with the corn that they were using. It destroyed the liver.

A lot of problems are now cropping up because of annual vaccinations of animals, both dog and cat.

Go online to their website and research the side effects.
It will surely tell you there. Or look up the active ingredients in the product. (the main medicine it uses ).

I don't know how to answer your question, but I do appreciate the warning. I currently have both of my dogs on those medications. Do you think you received a bad batch or do you think it was the medications themselves?
