I am an Atheist. I have read and studied the bible. I have attended chruch. I have studied many different types of religion. And after all of this I made an informed and educated decision to not believe in god.

Now....why do so many believers tell me I should not be here because it is the religion/spirituality section? I can ask/answer iintelligently about religion. Why don't I have a right to have a disscusion about god?

I agree completely! When I look at the category title I see "religion and spirituality" NOT Christianity only. I am on the fence on the whole "God" issue (so if he's real I will probably be struck by lightning on my way home from work - he wouln't do it now, he'd make me suffer through the work day), But I agree that it is small minded and ignorant to try to force your beliefs on others without listening or even comprehending anyone else's point of view.

They've started to do the same thing to me too. Fundamentalists feel threatened by free thinkers and brand us as evil, lost souls &c. This is a recurring theme in history and has resulted in the death of millions of people like us. And they think they've cornered the market on martyrdom. Atheism is a valid religious position, thankfully I live in a country which has a high incidence of tolerance. This is not an "only if you believe in God" section. Just let it wash over you and don't worry about them. At least you weren't brainwashed. Feel the Power and be true to yourself. You will be fine as long as you are positive. The other one I find amusing is the idea that I must be doing the devil's work by not believing. You can only believe in the devil if you believe in God. Hell is other people. Most of the current problems in the world are the result of religion. Hopefully they will wake up before they play out their own prophecies. Most of the really tolerant people I know are atheists. I, on the other hand, am a bastard, but at least I can admit it. You have more courage in your little finger than an entire ocean. You sound like a really good and thoughtful person. Good luck to you.

It sounds like you are asking two questions, neither posed as the primary one.

The important one IMHO that I can answer is:

"Why don't I have a right to have a disscusion about god?"

The short answer is that you certainly do have such a right and woe be to those so blind and zealous as to try and deny that right. It is such fundamentalist fanaticism that is at the core of the secular-theist schism.

That leads to the second question for which all I can offer is an opinion and observation:

"Now....why do so many believers tell me I should not be here because it is the religion/spirituality section?"

The short answer is fear and the complicated one involves control.

They resent anyone that refuses to conform because it ultimately threatens their faith.

In fact many religious people are probably not so intolerant but you can expect to find many who are and especially those that feel their right to dominate a medium for proselytizing is threatened.

Because they are ignorant and the emptiest barrels make the most noise. You know people are so stupid it angers and frightens me. Ask them this if did you ever think that maybe I come here for answers myself and that if someone else like me came here and "heard" something that really struck them they would take up an interest in religion and learning about it. Also there are different types of atheists as we know. There are those who believe and God but no particular religion. And there are those who do not believe in God but have a spiritual connection. That was just for those religious people who do not know what they are talking about and take the high and mighty approach even though their own Bible says that they are not worthy of that position.

You do have the right to discuss God. What aggravates people who read questions in this section is that many people come here only to bash the religion that we believe in. I believe everyone has a right to their own opinion but they need to remember that others have opinions/beliefs too and will defend them in a section that is about those beliefs.

They challenge anyone who doesn't believe exactly what they do. It's a thing they seem to do. I am pagan, and constantly getting slammed down by them. I have no idea why they need to force us into a religion, when their "God" gave us all free will to choose for ourselves.

I have to agree with the other posters. EVERYONE has the right to discuss god and or religion in a civilized manner. The keyword being civilized.

Absolutely you have a right to be here.
Atheism is a religion too. It is having faith that there is no God, even though there is no evidence or proof.
Of course, you have questions, and want to find answers.
As far as I am concerned, you are perfectly welcome here.
And I hope you find the answers you are looking for.
