I'm looking for some kind of a program to check for unnecesary files, clean the registry, make sure all "installed programs" really exist, free up memory, etc. But I'd like to get a program that is both functional and free. Anybody know where I can find such an aplication?

Windows comes with the Disk Cleanup program. Check the Programs section. Go into the Accessories folder, then System Tools. The icon looks like a tiny BROOM.

Then go to Download.com and get these two

Try WinASO, which you can find at www.downloads.com. The free trial version doesn't have a "30 day trial" limit or anything like that. Unlike most trial versions of Registry Optimizers, WinASO will clean ALL the problems it finds in your Registry, but it will only fix ten problems with each scan.

I'm on a really limited income, so rather than buy the unlimited program, I just sit and have it scan and fix 10 errors each time until I'm done.

It really did make a difference on my system, too.

Advanced Disk Cleaner gets most of the garbage off your system and it's free. There some others there like Uninstaller Pro that really compliment the Disk Cleaner well.
