the only way i learned how to straighten my hair was to go to a pro first.
I have vary thick wavy hair also, and when i used to blowdry and iron it, it used to puff up 10 minutes later.
Then i went to a salon and watched while they were doing it.
get a chi or a helen of troy..

My hair is like that, too. It's a pain.
Have your hair layered, and tell the stylist to really use the thinning shears. It'll really help.
My flat iron is the Remington Wet2straight. It works really well. Plus, it's designed to be used on wet or dry hair. Can skip blow-drying. Which on our type of hair, takes forever anyways.
Also, take some regular conditioner, and rub it between your palms to heat it a little, then work it through your hair, before you straighten. It protects your hair.
Finish with some gel to smooth down the top, if it has fly-aways.
Good luck.

A healthy way to go would be to go ceramic. you can get any ceramic flat iron at any beauty store. This works great.
A less expensive alternative would be Revlon. They have a ceramic coated flat iron that I have had for 10 years and I cant EVER travel without. ( I use it so much that I wear out the coating and need to replace it every 2 years-that is how I know its still around) :D Good Luck

I love my Solia. It is a tourine/ceramic straightener and it works wonderfully. And, make sure to use Chi Silk Infusion or some other such product before you straighten. The Chi product is wonderful because it isn't too heavy, it makes your hair really shiny and it smells devine!
Check out: www.folica.com . They have great prices and product reviews. Good luck!

GHD hair straighteners!! They can straighten just about any hair!! If you have thick hair you should buy the thick ones (the thin ones work best on fine shorter hair) look them up on ebay - you can get them for a bit cheaper on there.

well your first issue is u need to get a heat protectant so your hair doesnt frixzz out or get damaged. then make sure u are taking small sections at a time to straighten your hair. adjust the heat settings too you may not have it hot enough. i ahve always used them and i have thick hair.

i have very curly hair as well cuz i'm mixed with black n filipino
what i recommend for you to do is not straightening it with a blow dryer, unless you go to someone who really knows what they're doing
its better to flat iron it, in small sections of course, to come out more sleeker and more well done
before flat ironing, make sure you protect your hair from heat damage!!
